Garmin’s latest cycling head unit is specifically designed for mountain bikers and their unique needs, and it also appears to be a worthwhile option for bikepacking. The new Garmin Edge MTB is a rugged GPS device that features a more durable construction compared to other devices in the Edge series. It has seven buttons, a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass screen, and is compact, sitting between the larger Edge 1050 and smaller Edge 540. It measures 50.4 x 77.8 x 19.8mm and weighs just 58 grams.
The Edge MTB distinguishes itself from other devices with new enduro and downhill ride profiles, 5 Hz GPS recording that provides more detailed line info, and the ability to set timing gates. The device comes pre-loaded with Trailforks maps, including Forksight mode, which can provide names of trails up ahead, distance, elevation, and more. It has a battery life of up to 14 hours in demanding use cases, but can be extended up to 26 hours in battery saver mode.
The Edge MTB offers most of the same features as other Edge devices but loses some of the more specific training features, has no touchscreen, and lacks a wifi function like the Edge 540. It can connect to your smartphone or other components using Bluetooth and ANT+, has an IPX7 water rating, and sports a 2.13″ (54.1 mm) diagonal display. The Edge MTB has 32 GB of internal memory, which is capable of storing up to 100 courses and 200 hours of riding history. The device comes with an adjustable MTB mount, a top tube mount with strap, a tether, and a charging/data cable.
The Garmin Edge MTB is available now and costs $400 USD. Head over to Garmin.com to learn more.
