The comments were not in the written speech, according to the news site Starnieuws, which published them on 1 October. Simons tied the issue to signed agreements pending in parliament and to cooperation with neighbouring Brazil.

What Simons Said Off Script

Simons spoke after outlining Suriname’s term as chair of CARICOM, the Caribbean Community, from January to June 2027. She then turned to control over national territory, Starnieuws reported.

According to the outlet, she said small aircraft land in the interior and that she had been told where they were heading. “I don’t care where they are going. I don’t want them here,” she said.

“I want no drug planes in my interior,” Simons added, in remarks also carried in a Starnieuws video. The written text of the annual address does not include these lines.

An Agreement Waiting in Parliament

Simons said Suriname has asked for international support and needs better information about movements in the interior. She argued this would let the state act on policy rather than react to incidents.

“To be in charge of our territory and run a sound border policy, we need more information,” she said, as quoted by Starnieuws. She named Brazil and referred to an already signed agreement now before the National Assembly.

She said she expected parliament to cooperate so that Suriname can obtain the information quickly. GFC Nieuws reported that she cited agreements with both Brazil and the United States.

GFC Nieuws also reported her concern over international attention to Suriname as a possible drug transit country. Neither outlet described the terms of the agreements.

The Brazil Link

The remarks build on a visit Simons paid to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília in late May 2026. A joint statement then promised closer work against drug trafficking, arms smuggling and illegal mining, Waterkant reported.

The two governments also agreed to improve border and airspace surveillance, according to that report. They pledged faster information exchange between police services and closer ties between Brazil’s Federal Police and Suriname’s police force.

Simons closed the passage with her foreign-policy principles. Starnieuws quoted “peace without passivity,” “sovereignty without isolation” and “cooperation without subordination.”

Stabilisers and Risks

The tough line on drug planes comes with a cooperative frame rather than a unilateral crackdown. Shared information with a large neighbour could help a small state watch a vast, lightly policed interior.

The risk lies in the details. Data-sharing deals touch on sovereignty, and lawmakers have not yet said how they view this one.

Early party reactions reported by Suriname Herald focused on the budget, inflation and the gold sector. None of the reactions it carried addressed the drug-plane comments. The speech also set out the 2027 budget, covered in Suriname President Simons Uses Annual Address to Set 2027 Deficit at 4% of GDP, and energy plans in Suriname Power Cuts: Simons Pledges Shift From Heavy Oil to Gas and Solar.

What Is Not Yet Known

It is not known what the signed agreements with Brazil and the United States contain or what data they would share. No timetable for a parliamentary vote has been published.

The government has not announced new airstrip controls, flight rules or operations. The drug-plane quotes come from Starnieuws; GFC Nieuws carried the wider passage on the interior and drug transit, but not those lines.
