Sandra Hüller is set to campaign for Best Supporting Actress at the 99th Academy Awards for her performance in Paweł Pawlikowski‘s Fatherland, in a surprising change of category that could pave the way for a potential double Oscar nomination.

According to Variety, distributor MUBI will put forward Hüller and her co-star Hanns Zischler in the supporting categories for the upcoming awards season. The decision marks a shift from earlier expectations that Hüller would compete in the Best Actress category for the black-and-white post-war drama.

The film follows Erika Mann (Hüller) and her father, Nobel Prize-winning German author Thomas Mann (Zischler), as they travel through a divided Germany in 1949. Set against the aftermath of the Second World War, Fatherland explores the complicated relationship between father and daughter as they navigate a country still coming to terms with its past.

The category change also has implications for Hüller’s other awards-season contender, Rose. With Fatherland now positioned in supporting, the actress is expected to campaign for Best Actress for her performance in the historical drama, potentially allowing her to compete in both acting categories at the same ceremony.

Hüller has enjoyed an especially busy year, with appearances in Project Hail Mary and Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s Digger adding to an already impressive slate of performances. She previously received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Justine Triet‘s Anatomy of a Fall in 2024.

While securing nominations in both categories remains a considerable challenge, the latest development places Hüller in an intriguing position ahead of the 2027 Oscars.
