Restrap Bikepacking Bar Bag Updates with new bags & construction upgrades, riding

So, pretty much every Restrap handlebar bag in both their standard heavy-duty bikepacking and lightweight Race pack range get updated with smart new construction details, usability tweaks, and upgraded fabrics. Plus, they’ve added a new Rolltop Canister bag that will feel familiar to anyone who read our Utility Hip Pack review, plus a new Flat Bar Race Bar Bag setup for fastpackers on mountain bikes. All of which are now easier to use, more secure, and longer-lasting.

The core Restrap holster + dry bag concept remains. So it’s still easy to strap the bags to your bike, and also to easily remove them without messing with your refined setup. But now, all of those bags are easier to get on & off the bike, and they are more secure over the long haul.

The updates make all the products easier to use on a day-to-day basis for that whole customer base, while making them more straight forward to fit and functionally superior to what went before… but keeping the DNA of the holster, which has so many practical benefits for all riders.

What all is new?

Let’s fly through the bag updates, as they’ll even feature on the new Flat Bar Race & Rolltop Canister bar bags, too.

Since they all essentially start with a dry bag, that’s where Restrap’s updates start. Dry Bag shapes and sizes mostly remain unchanged. But they switched to a more robust, slightly heavier nylon fabric to simply make these dry bags last longer, no matter how rough you are with them. One other small dry bag tweak though, on the Race Drop Bar dry bag only, Restrap added new Hypalon reinforcements that make the roll-top easier to pack down.

Now, connecting the dry bags into the holsters, Restrap boosted security thanks to a simple but effective GripTight velcro patch that holds the two together. GripTight is a simple patch of velcro on all of the holsters and drybags that makes putting the drybag in the holster easier than before. Now a fully-packed dry bag stays put while loading it and you cinch down the holster straps. Plus, the velcro connection dramatically improves dry bag security while riding over the roughest terrain, keeping your gear from squirming around as you bump down the trail.

Race Holster shape is unchanged. But it does get a tweaked bar strap construction that “better triangulates against the bar and provides a more secure fit” while also lifting up the holster a bit more for improved front tire clearance.

The standard bikepacking Holster looks a bit more changed, but isn’t all that different either. It gets a similar triangulated bar strap tweak for improved stability, a new stretchy Stow Strap with silicone grippers up top for items you’d take on & off while riding, and it now uses cam-lock Fast Straps to secure it to the fork crown for easier setup & better off-road retention.

New Race Bar Bag – Flat Bar

The first new product addition isn’t really all-new. It’s a newly optimized version of the existing (updated) Race Bar Bag for flat bar mountain bikers. In fact, the Race Holster is identical to the drop bar variant, and the storage volume of the dry bag is the same 7L. It’s just that the new Flat Bar variant switched to a smaller 160mm diameter (vs. 180mm for Race Drop Bar & 200mm for standard Restrap Bikepacking bar packs), double-ended roll-top dry bag to increase tire clearance above the front wheel.

Since both ends roll closed, there are no external mesh pockets for easy access storage while riding. But since Flat Bar & Drop Bar Race Holsters are the same, Restrap suggests riders could buy a second Race Dry Bag separately if they planned to swap back and forth between different types of bikes.

All-New Rolltop Canister Bag

The Rolltop Canister Bag is all-new from a specific product perspective. But it does look to follow on the same overall design and versatility concept from the slightly larger (and more complex) Utility Hip Pack that we tested a year and a half ago.

The concept is similar – a small 4L waterproof roll-top bag with Fidlock magnetic closure that can serve several versatile uses. Strap it on top as an extra pouch to extend the standard Restrap bikepacking Holster Bar Bag’s storage. Strap it straight to your bar to carry snacks or an extra layer, with easy-access mesh pockets on each side. Or clip the included light paracord strap onto the Canister’s side loops and you get a simple shoulder bag you can carry around when you hop off the bike.
