Calling it a refinement and not a total redesign, the new Hope EVO brakes are the next evolution of the UK manufacturer’s beloved Tech 4 lineup. Featuring improved frame compatibility, braking power, and quality of life adjustments, these three new brake sets promise to be even better than before…

As an update from their popular Tech 4 brake, which we reviewed and ultimately awarded, the new Hope EVO brakes have been refined with updates to both the master cylinder and calipers. Their new range of EVO brakes include three distinct sets: the GR4, TR4, and X2 models. The first two, the GR4 and TR4 are—as their namesake suggests—maximum-power four-piston hydraulic calipers that supposedly offer greater power and modulation from the prior iterations of the Tech 4 brakes. The GR4 is targeted to downhill and aggressive enduro riding, and the TR4 is the general trail model, which is perhaps the most interesting in the lineup and directly compares to the Tech 4 E4 that we reviewed. The X2 is a two-piston caliper ideal for cross-country and lighter use.

Per Hope, the re-worked master cylinder features a new cam mechanism that works to reduce the amount of free stroke, while the piston assembly features a secondary guide bush and sliding guide that offers smoother operation throughout the full lever stroke. The caliper bodies have also been refined for greater stiffness, improved frame compatibility, and streamlined profiles, with bore caps also optimized for modern geometries.

The new Hope EVO brakes have three lever blade options: standard, control, and power. Though control and power are aftermarket purchases, the standard blade features a redesigned lever with increased hook and new dimple texture. The calipers themselves have a new cam design and piston improvements that are said to deliver a firmer bite point and improved feel throughout the braking zone. Upgraded internal piston mechanics and roller-bearing pivots offer a better feel, and the new simplified bleed port allows clean, tool-efficient bleeding without lid removal.

In keeping with the Tech 4 brakes, the new Hope EVO brakes will be available in either black or silver, with colored accents in the standard Hope colors. Pricing for the EVO GR4 with a standard black brake hoses is £240 (€301.50/$314). The EVO TR4 is £225.00 (€282.60/$294.40). The EVO X2 is £205 (€257.50/$268.20) with braided hose options in all three brake sets adding about 10 dollars, pounds, or euros more in cost. Brakes will arrive at shops and through distributors on the first of September.
