Chennai Super Kings are entering a new chapter after mutually parting ways with head coach Stephen Fleming, bringing an end to one of the longest coaching associations in IPL history. Fleming had been part of the franchise since its inaugural season in 2008 and took over as head coach in 2009, remaining in charge for the next 17 seasons. Under his leadership, CSK won five IPL titles and established themselves as one of the most consistent teams in the competition.

Fleming’s departure came after CSK endured three consecutive seasons without reaching the playoffs. The franchise also experienced a first in 2025 when it finished at the bottom of the IPL standings. Fleming has since been appointed England’s Test head coach, with his new role set to begin later this year. With the search for his successor underway, several prominent names have been linked with the CSK job. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now added another intriguing possibility to the discussion.

Ravichandran Ashwin names ideal candidate as CSK’s next head coach

Ashwin believes former England captain Eoin Morgan could be the Englishman who eventually takes charge of CSK. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former India all-rounder pointed out that names such as Andrew Flintoff and Brendon McCullum have also been discussed as potential options. He also suggested that the current coaching structure in England could potentially make such an arrangement possible. However, Ashwin admitted that he has a feeling Morgan could ultimately emerge as CSK’s preferred candidate.

“Names like Andrew Flintoff and Brendon McCullum have been doing the rounds. That’ll be a good swap to send Stephen Fleming to England and get McCullum here. Now, the ECB are fine with sharing jobs so McCullum can be England’s white-ball coach and do the same with CSK. But I have a feeling that Eoin Morgan could be that Englishman who becomes CSK’s head coach,” said Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

Morgan’s credentials make him an interesting option. He led England to their first men’s ODI World Cup title in 2019 and was instrumental in transforming the team’s approach to white-ball cricket. His experience in high-pressure franchise cricket and his understanding of modern T20 tactics could appeal to CSK as they look to refresh their approach.

Ashwin’s comments come amid a wider debate over whether CSK should appoint an established international coach or opt for someone with a strong connection to the franchise and Indian cricket.

Fans expect a turnaround of fortunes in IPL 2027

CSK’s next coaching appointment will carry considerable importance. The franchise has traditionally been built around stability, continuity and experienced leadership, but its recent results suggest that a change in direction may be necessary.

The three successive playoff absences have raised questions about CSK’s squad-building strategy, tactical approach and ability to adapt to the rapidly changing demands of T20 cricket. The new head coach will therefore be expected not only to maintain the franchise’s culture but also to inject fresh ideas into the setup.

Morgan could offer precisely that combination of leadership and modern white-ball thinking. Whether CSK eventually turn to him, another overseas coach or an Indian candidate remains to be seen. For now, Ashwin’s backing has added another major name to the conversation. With IPL 2027 expected to mark the beginning of a new era in Chennai, the appointment of Fleming’s successor could prove crucial to determining whether the five-time champions can rediscover their winning formula.
