Manchester United’s latest crisis lurched from bad to worse as they were handed a chastening 3-0 Premier League defeat at home by Bournemouth.

Battered in midweek by Serie A side, Como, United were equally inept on home soil as the Cherries made it superb wins back to back after beating AC Milan on Thursday night.

The pre-match headlines were made when Michael Carrick benched captain Bruno Fernandes after he became the latest key player to speak out in midweek.

Fernandes suggested it was the responsibility of the manager and his coaching staff to identify problems and make changes during matches after their dismal showing in Como.

He was left out as a result – and stayed on the bench throughout a sorry showing that leaves United 16th in the Premier League and Carrick surely on borrowed time.

Rayan side-footed Bournemouth ahead at Old Trafford before Marcus Tavernier doubled the lead soon after before the break.

And there was time for Evanilson to score a brilliant third as Old Trafford emptied.

Bournemouth had been on top when they went ahead. Defender Ayden Heaven was booked for a silly two-footed challenge out wide and from the resulting free-kick Brazil forward Rayan slashed in.

Bryan Mbeumo then did have United’s belated first shot on target but not before chants of ‘sacked in the morning’ were aimed at Carrick.

And Tavernier managed to tap in a second before the break after another error from Leny Yoro.

Fernandes stayed on the bench at half-time as Carrick sent on Matheus Cunha instead, with Bournemouth having the ball in the net inside 25 seconds of the restart after more disastrous defending.

An offside flag saved United that time, with the hapless Heaven gifting another chance straight away but Rayan’s shot was saved.

United, now are winless in eight games in all competitions, were all over the place and went 3-0 down when Evanilson outpaced the defence to latch onto a clearance, ran around Senne Lammens and curled in from an improbable angle.

Carrick had his name sung late on as supporters turned their dissent to the club’s board – but with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Liverpool to come the hosts are in trouble – and no mistake.
