California Senator Previews Schiff’s Role if Democrats Win Midterms

Adam Schiff has still not produced the evidence of Russian collusion that he repeatedly promised beginning in 2017.

The California Democrat, now a U.S. senator, made numerous claims over the years that there was “direct evidence” of collusion. Yet the final 2019 report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller stated that the investigation “did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”

The House of Representatives censured Schiff in 2023 and removed him from the Intelligence Committee over what lawmakers described as efforts to “mislead” the public.

Still, Schiff is from California, where political failure can sometimes become a steppingstone to higher office—see Gavin Newsom. Schiff went on to win election to the Senate in 2024, where he remains today.

On Sunday, Schiff appeared barely able to contain his enthusiasm while discussing the possibility of Democrats retaking control of Congress—and launching another round of investigations—during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The question was hard to miss: Who looked more excited about the prospect of additional impeachments, Schiff or host Kristen Welker?

A visibly hopeful Welker asked whether impeachment could be on the table. Schiff attempted to minimize the possibility, insisting that his attention was on broader priorities. His expression, however, suggested that the prospect had clearly caught his attention:

WELKER: Let me ask you about a big debate right now inside the Democratic party. If Democrats do win back control of Congress. It’s about impeachment.

You, of course, led the first impeachment of President Trump back in 2019. As we sit here today, Senator, do you believe that President Trump has committed impeachable offenses?

Schiff’s response was striking:

SCHIFF: I feel the same way I did early in the Russia investigation which is: You don’t prejudge the outcome before you even do the oversight.

The apparent contradiction was hard to overlook. During the Russia investigation, Schiff repeatedly suggested that President Trump was guilty of grave wrongdoing, even before verifiable evidence emerged—and the Mueller investigation ultimately did not establish collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Schiff then shifted to familiar Democratic talking points about affordability, a subject his critics say is difficult for the party to claim given the tax increases enacted in states it controls and the rise to 9.1 percent under the previous Democratic administration. He soon made his position on impeachment clearer, however:

SCHIFF: [Democrats] should focus on [whether] the [alleged Trump] corruption is driving costs up.

If that corruption leads in the direction of impeachment, it will lead wherever it leads.

But we should put our overriding emphasis not on impeachment, but on bringing the cost down for the American people on our affirmative agenda, on our oversight agenda, yes, our investigative agenda. But it should be with an eye to improving the quality of life for the American people.

He said a whole lot of other words, most of which didn’t add up to anything, but impeachments and investigations are where his true heart lies. How do we know?

Because we’ve seen that movie before.

Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
