Over 100 000 patrons went through the gates at The Club at Steyn City, making it the biggest-ever attended golf event on South African soil.
During Thursday’s opening round, however, a brawl broke out between fans which left a sour taste.
The incident took place near the fan exit as two fans were seen pushing and shoving each other, while a few others in attendance attempted to separate the pair.
Matters then escalated when, what looks like, a different fight broke out only metres away.
The original group appears to then scamper across to join/separate the new fight before fists meet faces.
Security is seen in close proximity to the fight but hesitate to intervene as patrons tackle one another to the ground while swinging punches wildly, a few landing at its desired targets while others catch fresh air.
A telling blow occurs when one of the men in the original squabble appears to knock down the other.
The brawl eventually fizzles out once a large group of security officers, dressed in reflective vests insert themselves between the patrons.
Despite the physicality of the altercation, Gauteng police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed to News24 that no injuries were reported.
No arrests were made either as none of the patrons decided to register a case with the police.
“The affected individuals opted not to register a case of assault and they were all immediately removed from the venue,” a statement from the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) read on Sunday.
While no confirmation on the toxicity of the individuals involved have been confirmed, PROVJOINTS suspected that alcohol played a role in the behaviour of the patrons.
“On 19 March 2026 at about 20:00, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and private security personnel posted outside the perimeter of the Welcome Centre at the LIV Golf South Africa in Steyn City, restored order when they stopped an altercation among a group of seemingly intoxicated individuals involved in a brawl,” the statement read.
“The matter was reported to the Venue Operational Centre (VOC) where the implementation of the safety and security of the event is coordinated and monitored.”
LIV Golf declined to comment on the events of the brawl. “We won’t be providing any official comments on the matter,” a spokesperson for LIV Golf said.
