  • Wellington matric pupil Miguel Hendricks raised R10 000 by selling fruit to fund his farewell, but used much of it to support his family.
  • News24 readers donated more than R8 000, with contributions ranging from R70 to R5 000, ensuring Miguel could attend his big night.
  • The community’s generosity means he has everything he needs for his matric ball, turning his dream into reality.

Donations as small as a pensioner’s R70 to a generous R5 000 have helped turn a Wellington teenager’s matric ball dream into reality.

Wellington matric pupil Miguel Hendricks will officially attend his matric farewell after News24 readers rallied behind him, almost doubling the money he had painstakingly earned by selling grapes and fruit since February.

The outpouring of support followed a News24 article published two weeks ago about Miguel’s determination to pay for his own matric ball without placing additional financial strain on his mother, the sole breadwinner in a household of six.

Between February and May, the hardworking teenager raised R10 000 by selling grapes at R20 a punnet. But while the money was originally intended for his matric farewell, much of it was redirected to help keep his family afloat.

The funds went towards groceries, electricity, home repairs, his final-year school fees, and his matric farewell suit.

By the time grape season ended in May, every cent was gone.

But Miguel refused to give up.

Determined to make his matric farewell a success, he continued selling different types of fruit, hoping to raise enough money to cover the remaining costs.

Then came an unexpected blessing.

News24 readers from across the country reached out to the Hendricks family, opening their hearts – and wallets – to help the teenager.

In total, just over R8 000 was donated.

Among the donations was a touching contribution of R70 from a pensioner who said Miguel reminded her of her late son.

For Miguel, the generosity of complete strangers was overwhelming.

“I still can’t believe it. This all feels so surreal because these kinds of blessings don’t come easily to us this side of the world,” he said.

The support means that Miguel has now purchased everything he needs for the big night.

Nestled between mountains, vineyards and wine estates, Wellington is known for its agricultural heritage, rugby culture and predominantly Afrikaans-speaking community. Many residents work on surrounding fruit farms, including Miguel’s mother.

For the teenager, who is also an avid rugby player, the donations have lifted a weight off his shoulders.

He said:

I’m not going to lie, but I was stressing because the fruit packages weren’t selling as fast as the grapes were. People in Wellington love grapes because not only are they fresh, but they’re always perfectly sweet and big.

Thanks to the donations and his own hard work, Miguel has managed to organise every detail for his farewell.

The essentials are covered, right down to the cutlery, tables and decorations for the finger foods and savouries his mother plans to serve to family, local rugby players, and friends who will gather to celebrate the last of her children matriculating.

What started as a teenager selling fruit on the side of the road to chase a dream has become a story of perseverance, sacrifice and the kindness of strangers.

And when Miguel arrives at his matric farewell venue in Paarl, he will not be arriving alone. News24 will be there to witness the special occasion.

For a teenager who spent months putting his family’s needs ahead of his own, the night promises to be more than just a matric farewell. It will be a celebration of resilience, community and the reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can change someone’s life.
