Three people have been killed during a shootout with police in Mahikeng.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Adele Myburgh said the three suspects were shot dead by the SAPS National Intervention Unit following an ATM bombing in Zeerust.

“The suspects have been cornered at their safe house in Magogo, Mahikeng, where there was a shootout between police and the suspects. The acting provincial commissioner is on the way to the crime scene,” she said.

News24 understands that the operation forms part of a broader national undertaking, Operation Leopard, which actively seeks to curb ATM robberies.

An insider with knowledge of the operation said that the shootout followed an ATM bombing in Zeerust last night. The robbers fled with some cash, but police soon intercepted one vehicle and arrested two people.
