Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and City manager Kagiso Lerutla in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court.
Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and suspended city manager Kagiso Lerutla have been granted R30 000 bail each.
Magistrate Emmanual Magampa made the ruling in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where Mkhwanazi and Lerutla face charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.
“The issues were narrow, limited to the likelihood of the applicants interfering with the witnesses. There is no indication of the applicants approaching anyone to not provide statements or testify,” Magampa said of Mkhwanazi and Lerutla.
Mkhwanazi and Lerutla are accused of orchestrating a fraud scheme in 2019 in which Mkhwanazi’s driver, Thabang Tsotesti, allegedly impersonated Lerutla in court to avoid a traffic violation while Lerutla was attending a chief financial officer job interview.
Mkhwanazi and Tsotetsi allegedly split R400 000 equally, paid to them by Lerutla for the scheme.
The arrests have formed part of the broader Madlanga Commission Task Team investigation into alleged corruption within the metro police department.
