Civic organisation March and March during their march to the Union Buildings on Tuesday.
About 150 protestors aligned with the March and March movement left Pretoria's Burgers Park on Tuesday morning, more than two hours late, for the Union Buildings to stage their anti-illegal immigration protest.
The march was delayed for more protesters to arrive, with the crowd far smaller than the thousands of people who took to the streets in support of March and March in Durban in recent weeks.
Many of the protestors participating in the Pretoria protest action on Tuesday wore Operation Dudula regalia and ActionSA colours, and sang isiZulu traditional songs.
Protesters waved placards that read: “Reclaim our country. Stop illegal immigration” and “Illegal immigration is a crime”. Others bore placards that read: “GNU, put SANDF at our borders.”
Marchers told News24 that their picket was against both undocumented foreign nationals and the government's failure to act.
The movement has drawn widespread criticism and accusations of xenophobia. It has also resulted in the South African envoy to Ghana being summoned by that country’s foreign minister to explain, following the apprehension of a Ghanaian man in Durban by a movement member who demanded to see his papers.
