New information regarding the Phala Phala scandal has come to light in an IPID report.

A report by the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID), completed in October 2023 and that has remained secret until this week, has shed new light on the conduct of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s police security chief, Major General Wally Rhoode.

Rhoode conducted an investigation into the theft of at least $580 000 in cash from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in February 2020, and IPID has found he acted in violation of SAPS regulations in doing so.

But, Rhoode was cleared of similar charges in an internal disciplinary hearing. The IPID report does, however, raise new questions about Ramaphosa’s role. Investigative journalist Azarrah Karrim and Kyle Cowan discuss the implications.
