New guard, new game: Fighting for the DA’s future

The DA is gearing up for a pivotal weekend as it selects new leadership at its federal congress.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is widely expected to become the party’s fifth leader, though his bid faces competition from relatively unknown candidate Sibusiso Dyonase.

With Helen Zille redirecting her focus to the Johannesburg mayoral race, the position of chairperson of the Federal Council is also up for grabs. Three candidates are vying for this role: Deputy Finance Minister Ashor Sarupen, National Assembly house chairperson Werner Horn, and Neo Mokoena.

Additionally, a new federal chairperson will be elected. Incumbent Ivan Meyer hopes to retain his position but faces a challenge from Solly Msimanga. This role serves as deputy to the party leader and presides over federal congresses.

The congress marks a significant moment for the DA as it seeks to chart its future direction under new leadership.

In this week’s Friday Briefing, several perspectives shed light on the party’s transition.

Political journalist and author Qaanitah Hunter reflects on John Steenhuisen’s tenure as party leader while examining the challenges facing the incoming leadership team. Read the full submission here.

Parliamentary reporter Jan Gerber addresses the persistent issue of smaller parties that has long troubled the DA. He argues that the party needs serious introspection about why voters are choosing smaller parties over the DA. Read the analysis here.

Outgoing DA leader John Steenhuisen offers his parting perspective, examining his successes during his time in charge. Read Steenhuisen’s reflection here.
