The National Consumer Commission says the Bridgestone recall affects Ford and Volkswagen vehicles.

The National Consumer Commission has announced the recall of Bridgestone tyres fitted to certain Ford and Volkswagen vehicles.

The commission said the Duravis R660 Eco tyre treads could deteriorate under wet and rocky road conditions, increasing the risk of car crashes.

The Duravis R660 Eco 215/65R16C 109/107T tyres were fitted to Ford Transit Custom and Ford Tourneo Custom models made in 2024 and 2025.

Volkswagen vehicles were also fitted with the tyres at the Ford plant. No information was given regarding which models had been fitted with the tyres.

However, the consumer watchdog said all the affected vehicles were sold and distributed in South Africa between 22 October 2023 and 8 November 2025.

The local recall comes nearly six months after Bridgestone UK issued a notice for the van tyre recall.

The tyre maker also issued similar recalls in New Zealand, whose product safety monitoring agency issued a recall notice in March. However, Product Safety New Zealand noted no reports of related injuries or accidents in the country, in Australia, or elsewhere in the world at the time.

In a statement, the National Consumer Commission said continued use of the Duravis R660 Eco tyre could lead to extensive damage and increase the risk of a crash. It urged consumers to request tyre replacements.

“The affected tyres are more susceptible to cuts and partial penetrations than anticipated when used in rugged and wet environments. These cuts can lead to moisture intrusion and subsequent oxidation of the tyre belt.

“This may lead to corrosion, creating a separation area that could grow over time. Car owners may notice a tyre bulge, tread deformation or additional tread cuts which may become apparent on the tread surface.

“Extended use of these tyres leads to tread deformation and, over time, may end in tread delamination, which could affect how the vehicle responds to the driver’s input,” the watchdog said on Friday.
