SuperSport has announced the passing of Afrikaans commentator, television host and musician Johnny Davids, who died suddenly in the early hours of Thursday.
Davids, aged 49, reportedly died of a heart attack.
Originally from Namibia, he rose to prominence after joining the broadcaster in 2012, becoming a well-known voice in rugby and cricket coverage.
Over time, he earned a reputation for his insightful analysis and distinctive Afrikaans commentary, which struck a chord with audiences across the region.
His talents were not limited to television. Davids enjoyed a varied career that included radio broadcasting and music, where he expressed a deep connection to storytelling and performance.
His versatility made him a respected figure both within and beyond the sporting world.
Davids was most recently part of SuperSport’s SA20 cricket coverage, where his energetic style and sharp observations added colour to the tournament and enhanced the viewing experience for fans.
In a statement, SuperSport described Davids as a valued colleague whose passion for sport and engaging personality made him a standout presence on screen and behind the scenes.
CANAL+ director for sport content in English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, Rendani Ramovha, paid tribute to Davids, highlighting his influence and character.
“Johnny was an immense talent and a cherished member of our broadcasting team. His dedication to his craft and his unique ability to articulate the emotion and nuance of sport made him truly special,” Ramovha said.
