An earthquake has reportedly hit near Naples, as footage shared online shows chaos in Italy. The 4.7 eartquake hit the town of Pozzuoli which sits on the Campi Flegrei volcanic area.

Videos and photos circulating on social media show debris across the streets and damages to buildings. Several areas have no power at the moment. Several streets, now covered in debris, and buidings have been damaged.

The earthquake was also felt in Napoli and other nearby towns. At least 10 people were injured, the latest reports from Italy say.

Campi Flegrei seen increasingly frequent seismic activity

Campi Flegrei, which encompasses a large part of western Naples, is a densely populated volcanic caldera.

It has experienced increasingly frequent seismic activity in recent years.

The government has increased monitoring in recent years as a result.

Other earthquakes hit the area

At around 10pm local time, another earthquake (3.8) hit the same area. Other minor tremors also followed.

The first one (4.7) occurred at around 7.40pm local time. 

At least 10 people injured

Media are now reporting those injured after the earthquake are now at least 10.

More, minor tremors are still being recorded and felt by residents.

More earthquakes have been recorded, but their magnitude appeared to be smaller than the one that hit the area earlier.

Tonight's eartquake was among the most powerful of the last 40 years, it has been reported.

New phase of volcanic activity

From 2005 to today, a new phase of bradyseism has been underway which in April 2025 produced an uplift of about 144 centimeters, the INGV also said.

Four injured after earthquake

According to the latest reports from Italy, at least four people were injured.

What is the volcanic activity affecting this area?

The National Institute of Geology and Volcanology explains Campi Flegrei, a massive supervolcano near Naples, Italy, has been experiencing a prolonged period of unrest characterized by frequent eartquake swarms and significant ground uplift, called bradyseism.

Council assisting residents affected

Here is a message from Pozzuoli mayor, Luigi Manzoni.

"I understand the concern and apprehension that can arise in these moments, especially among families. We immediately activated the Municipal Operations Center (COC) to coordinate all monitoring and assistance activities for the population.

"We are in constant contact with the Vesuvius Observatory, the Civil Protection Department, and all the competent authorities to follow the evolution of the ongoing seismic swarm minute by minute.”

Napoli City Council said a high-voltage pylon has partially collapsed.

Tonight's earthquake is believed to be part of a seismic swarm which has been affecting the Campi Flegrei area in the last few months.

Numerous power outages and local public transport disruptions have been reported, with delays and suspensions occurring.
