Rain continued to wreak havoc across the country on Friday (July 10, 2026), with more landslides in the hill states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh blocking crucial highways, and flooded rivers in the northeastern states forcing authorities to evacuate people to safer areas. In Himachal Pradesh, heavy to extremely heavy rains disrupted normal life in many parts, blocking roads, damaging bridges and uprooting trees. Schools remained closed in many parts of the State.

At least five more people died in incidents related to rain, even as parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan, saw a dry day after days of incessant heavy showers. In Shimla, commuters faced inconvenience as 27 link roads were closed for vehicular traffic, officials said.

A 100-meter stretch of the Yamunotri National Highway near Syanachatti in Uttarkashi district was damaged by a landslide, and repair work is in progress at the spot. The Gangotri National Highway faced frequent disruptions due to falling boulders and stones at Nagun and Nalu Pani. Continuous rainfall also caused Ganga, Yamuna, and their tributaries—along with several smaller rivers—to swell.

Monsoon deficit narrows sharply, but weak Kharif sowing remains a key risk: Report

India’s monsoon has shown a significant improvement in recent weeks, sharply reducing the rainfall deficit, but weak Kharif crop sowing continues to pose a risk for the agriculture sector in the coming weeks, according to a report by Capital 360.

The report recorded a cumulative rainfall deficit of 15% below normal as of Wednesday (July 8), from 38% a week earlier, helped by strong weekly rainfall that was 45% above normal. During the week ended July 8, India received 83.6 mm of rainfall against the normal level of 57.5 mm.

The improvement in rainfall has also widened its geographical spread. According to the report, 25 of the country’s 36 meteorological subdivisions have now received excess or normal rainfall, while nearly 49% of districts recorded excess or normal rainfall.

The landslip was caused by hill cutting associated with the construction activity: Shimla Mayor

According to Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan, preliminary assessment indicates that the landslip was caused primarily by hill cutting associated with the construction activity, although water seepage was initially suspected.

He said the water pipeline in the area had already been shut to rule out leakage as a contributing factor.

Mr. Chauhan said the landslide, which intensified on Saturday (July 11) morning, has increased the risk to nearby residential buildings. He added that complaints regarding the construction had been received earlier and action had already been initiated.“Our immediate priority is the safety of residents. If required, families living in vulnerable houses will be shifted to safer locations,” he said.

Municipal Corporation has fully mobilised its resources in Sanjauli: Shimla Mayor

The Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan said officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and local revenue authorities, have been deployed to monitor the situation in rain-triggered landslips in the Bothwell area of Sanjauli, which endangered several houses. Affected houses are being continuously assessed.

Referring to the ongoing monsoon season and the India Meteorological Department’s heavy rainfall warnings, Mr. Chauhan said the Municipal Corporation has fully mobilised its resources.

“In view of the weather warnings, all men and machinery have been deployed. The Municipal Corporation has its own equipment, and we have hired around 100 to 150 labourers for emergency response,” he said.

He added that whenever trees fall due to heavy rain, the Forest Department is immediately informed for removal. Dangerous trees identified in vulnerable areas are also being removed as a precautionary measure.

'Strict action against illegal construction': Shimla Mayor on Sanjauli landslip

Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan on Saturday (July 11) said strict action would be taken against those responsible for construction activity in violation of the monsoon ban after a rain-triggered landslip in the Bothwell area of Sanjauli endangered several houses.

Speaking to ANI during his visit to the affected site, Mr. Chauhan said the owner of the construction project would be held accountable and directed to build a retaining wall at their own expense to stabilise the slope and prevent further damage.

“The construction owner has accepted responsibility, and we have issued written directions to construct the retaining wall at the earliest. Strict action will be taken against any construction carried out despite the ban,” Mr. Chauhan said.

Show same concern for rain-hit farmers as traffic jams: Onion growers tell Maharashtra government

An onion-growers’ body on Saturday (July 11, 2026) urged the Maharashtra government to show the same urgency for rain-affected farmers as it does for traffic disruptions such as the recent Mumbai-Pune expressway landslip.

Maharashtra State Onion Growers’ Association president Bharat Dighole stated that while inconvenience caused to commuters during heavy rains got immediate attention, the financial losses suffered by farmers due to recurring natural calamities and crashing crop prices are rarely met with equal concern.

“When traffic comes to a standstill in cities for a few hours, the entire State’s attention is drawn to it. But when excessive rains, hailstorms, unseasonal showers, floods or drought destroy farmers’ crops, the same amount of concern is rarely seen,” Mr. Dighole noted in a statement.

Heavy rains cause landslips in Shimla, submerge houses in Kinnaur

Moderate to heavy rains lashed Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, leading to landslips in Shimla, a bailey bridge installed only last year collapsing in Sangla, and floodwater submerging a single-storeyed house and jeopardising several others in Kinnaur district.

The retaining wall beneath the road near Sanjauli College in the Bothwell area of Shimla city collapsed early morning, sending debris sliding towards the residential houses below.

Officers from the district administration and other departments have arrived at the spot to assess the situation, officials said.

Locals claimed the municipal corporation had granted permission for a private construction project in the area that involved excavation, which became unstable due to incessant rains, triggering the landslips.
