After 21 days, 10 hours, and 48 minutes, Molly Weaver has made history by becoming the first woman to hold the record for the fastest circumnavigation of Great Britain by bicycle, shaving 17 hours off the previous record. Molly left London on June 15th with plans to set a new Guinness World Record, attempting to beat the overall record, which was set 40 years ago by Nick Sanders in 1984. Yesterday afternoon, she arrived back where she started in London with the record secured.
This was the first time a woman had attempted to break the British Circumnavigation World Record. Although taking the overall record was Molly’s overall ambition, she was also determined to establish a strong Women’s Record for more women to chase over the coming years and show what women are capable of on a bike. She managed to do all that and more over the past three weeks.
Molly’s journey has inspired athletes and adventurers worldwide, proving the power of challenges closer to home while raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) on her way as she passed over 100 RNLI lifeboat stations.
Molly rode professionally in the World Tour, competing in events including the Tour of Flanders, the Women’s Tour, Giro Rosa, and being a member of Team GB in two victorious World Championship Races. Molly experienced a life-threatening crash in 2018, which ended her career on the road, before returning to competitive cycling as a successful solo ultra-distance athlete. She has won and podiumed in multiple international events over both road and mixed-terrain routes, as well as setting a number of fastest known times (FKTs) over some of the hardest multi-terrain routes in the UK.
