18 new singles are looking for love as Married At First Sight Australia returned to screens

Married At First Sight Australia viewers have slammed a "body-shaming" comment just minutes into the new series.

Tonight (Monday, March 9), a brand new series of Married At First Sight Australia premiered on E4 with 18 Australian singles taking part in the experiment looking for love.

Guided by experts including Alessandra Rampolla and relationship pros John Aiken and Mel Schilling, the singles are matched by experts before they meet for the very first time at the altar.

After their wedding they discover if they are truly compatible as they put their relationship to the test and head off on their honeymoon before moving in together and mingling with the other couples as well as meeting family and friends.

This time around, the series has brought a brand new twist as 'Revelations Week' will be introduced for the first time this season - though viewers will have to tune in to find out exactly what that entails.

Tonight's instalment once again saw the singles meet for the first time on their wedding day as their friends and family watched on. However, within minutes of the brand new series, viewers were left fuming after one star's "body-shaming" comments.

As the boys were meeting for the first time before their wedding day, newcomer Chris introduced himself as he shared his preferences and his 'turn offs'.

He admitted: "Looks are massive for me, it's not all about the personality surely?"

When asked what his "deal breaker" would be, Chris said: "Overweight for me."

He continued: "I don't go down the street calling someone fat but if I have a genuine interest in someone they're generally going to be fit and healthy."

He could later be heard saying: "Fat people, no-go", a comment that came as a huge surprise to his peers.

Speaking to the camera, Grayson said: "Chris is very blatant and blunt and sort of indicates to me why he's struggling to find love, because if that's the way he speaks about women then he's got no chance."

Taking to X, one person fumed: "Off the bat body shaming." Another wrote: "So this Chris is one of the villains then."

A third added: "Yeah Chris is going to annoy a few people." A fourth replied: "10 minutes in and some of us already don't like Chris. Off to a great start."

One viewer commented: "Immediately Chris is annoying." Another stated: "Preferences are totally fine. But it’s how you word it. Rather than say you don’t want someone “fat”, say you’re into health and fitness and you want someone the same."

Another annoyed viewer said: "Only 10 minutes in and Chris is clearly this year’s love to hate."

However, some viewers said Chris could have a "redemption arc" later in the series

Married At First Sight Australia returns tomorrow at 7.30pm on E4.
