Live updates: England vs Argentina

57' Chance England!

They have another chance down that right side.

Rogers, passes inside to Kane but the backtracking Argentine defence does just enough to block the ball away.

55' BRILLIANT GOAL FROM ENGLAND!

Anthony Gordon scores!

That is a lovely ball from Harry Kane forward to Rogers, the ball cut off before it got to him but Rice was there to pick it up and flick the ball back to Rogers.

Rogers crossed deep to the six yard box where Anthony Gordon timed his run perfectly to turn the ball in at the back post!

Brilliant football from England!

53' Spence is down

Simeone whacks Djed Spence with a trailing arm - giving away his sixth foul of the game - a game high.

The Argentine bench are upset.

51' Cristian Romero is booked

He grabbed Bellingham to stop England from breaking after a brilliant ball from Djed Spence out from the back.

Another clear yellow card.

47' CHANCE ARGENTINA!

(Getty Images)

Julián Alvarez has a shot from an acute angle that Pickford saves!

It was given away by Djed Spence but a great stop from Pickford saves his blushes.

The ball is still there for Argentina and Alvarez hits the side netting.

Argentina appeal for a corner - and I assume because they asked so nicely, they got one - didn't look like Pickford got a touch on the two replays that were shown.

The corner is swept short, then the cross comes in and England clear.

They fatally leave Messi alone though and the ball is played into him again - but Bellingham shoulders him off the ball - great strength from the Englishman.

46' False start for kick off

Not sure what's happened there. For a ref that's been letting a lot go, that is surprisingly nit-picky.

Anyway, England kicks off now and the ball goes back to Pickford, who launches it long.

Injury-less

Correct me if I’m wrong Simon but I don’t recall the Physios coming on at all in that half ? That’s also got to be some sort of record ?

- Phillip

I believe you're right, Phillip.

That's a good spot.

Of course, when a physio does come on now, players have to take a minute off the pitch afterwards, so I guess they all want to stay on as much as possible.

For the record

I don't think the referee had a bad half.

It was always going to be a battle out there.

He has got almost every call spot on I think, under immense pressure

Your entertainment update

While we take a moment to reset for the second half, FIFA has announced Post Malone will headline the tournament's closing ceremony.

It will start 1.5 hours before the final kicks off at New York New Jersey Stadium, which will be on Monday morning AEST.

This announcement comes after FIFA confirmed there will be a Super Bowl style 30 minute halftime show, featuring headliners Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber and BTS.

Considering the amount of Bon Jovi we've heard through this tournament, and they're in the midst of doing a string of shows at Madison Square Garden, I would've loved an old school hair metal moment.

Your thoughts

The referee has let so much go on the first half that when someone is finally sent off the other team will cry foul. There should have been at least 4 yellow cards so far and it looks like Argentina are thinking the referee will let things go and are getting away with their foul play.

- Al

Argentina winning! On fouls count. A half where nothing much happened except a sort of settling into an equilibrium of stiff resistance to tiny scintillations of attacking cleverness from both sides.. Hm, another 15 of that, then perhaps everyone goes hell for leather in the last stanza.

- Big Ben

A "spiteful game'- who is writing your headlines?

- Robert

Yeah- s I said earlier Simon , I hope the referee is up to this.

- Phillip

'They have been kicked off the park at times': Robinson

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson is just as angry about the officiating and the things that are not being called.

He says that the first half was "one of the worst refereeing performances I've seen at this World Cup" on the BBC.

"He didn't get a grip of the game from the start," Robinson says.

"He's let so much go and the two coaches are not happy either.

"England have had to stick in this game because it has been tough.

"They have been kicked off the park at times. There's a clear game plan.

"There's been no real flow to the game."

'If it was any other nation, it would be looked at by the VAR': Boateng

Strong words at half time from Kevin-Prince Boateng.

He is very critical of the referee, saying Argentina were getting away with too much in the opening exchanges.

"I believe this is a situation [when], if it was any other nation, it would be looked at by the VAR," he says.

"I see Argentina are being favoured by the referees."

Not been much going on in the goal mouths

The first shot was in the 37th minute.

Fiery first half

As we expected, that first half was lively to say the least.

And several players from both teams flocked to the referee at the break having animated discussions.

Lionel Messi remained there the longest after everyone else departed, clearly expressing displeasure at some decisions.

Then Jude Bellingham returned to talk to the officials again, alongside some of England's substitutes.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni also shared some thoughts on his way down the tunnel.

So everyone has strong feelings and wants the officials to know about it.

HT: All square after cagey first half

(Getty Images)

The referee is given a small reception as he blows his whistle, keeping calm as players from both sides look to pester him.

Lionel Messi is there longest, arguing about something that hasn't gone his way, although I don't know what that could be.

He is very animated about something, so perhaps we'll hear more about that, but it is goal-less at the break.

It is, in fact, a half that has been without a single shot on target, too.

A very, very tense and tight and niggly match so far.

45+3' Reece James goes down

The free kick goes England's way and the Argentine bench get frustrated, rising up in anger.

England puts in a cross that is deflected behind for what should be a corner - but time is up and the referee says it's time for a break.

Pickford's pings could be crucial

Loving these long balls from Pickford. If he gets his range spot on , could be a game changer.

42' Lisandro Martínez booked

Argentina have a good spell of possession in England's third of the field, but then England latch onto a poor pass and race away up field.

Lisandro Martínez is there pulling back on one of the England players shirts like his life depends on it - and is rightly shown a card.

He needed to do it though - Anderson was free on the right.
