Tate McRae sweeps, Justin Bieber shut out at Juno Awards Gala

Hi! I'm Natalie Harmsen and I'm an associate producer with CBC Music. Typically I'm in Toronto, but tonight I'm giving you a behind-the-scenes look at some of the winners from the media room in Hamilton.
From the Grammys to the Junos, Bieber's Swag comeback has left him without golden trophies this year.
Last night was a battle of the pop stars, as Bieber went into Juno weekend with six nominations, but was completely shut out by Tate McRae, who took home major wins such as album of the year, single of the year and artist of the year at the Juno Awards Gala, the industry awards that take place the night before the Junos.
McRae's album So Close to What also beat out Bieber's Swag II for pop album of the year.
Although 2025 was a major year for Bieber with his two surprise albums Swag and Swag II, it's McRae who has been touring and promoting her album with interviews (including a Rolling Stone cover story), while Bieber mostly promoted his new projects on social media. Bieber is up for the fan choice award tonight.

As they hinted to fans, Rush did have something special in store for the Junos: they kicked off the show with a historic performance: the first time the group has played publicly with new drummer Anika Nilles since the death of Neil Peart in 2020.
But the spirit of Peart was present, as footage of the legendary drummer appeared behind the band during the performance.
It also marks the first time the band has performed on the Junos stage. They chose a deep cut to mark the occasion: Finding My Way, the first song of their first album, released in 1974.
A little Junos history: Rush won the award for most promising group in 1975, and have since sold over 40 million albums.
Notable looks from the orange carpet

The Junos orange carpet is winding down now, but it’s been great to see Canadian labels like Lesley Hampton, Heather Bouchier and Sagradesa represented. There were also a lot of winning black-and-white looks, along with some bold moments in red.
For a recap of all the must-see looks, plus as many designer and styling details as we could snag, see our full roundup.
Meet your host: Mae Martin
Comedian, actor and recording artist Mae Martin will host the 2026 Juno Awards. (CBC)
Hello! I'm Melody Lau, a producer with the CBC Music team in Toronto and a longtime Mae Martin fan. If you're not familiar with this year's Juno Awards host, let me fill you in.
Martin is a Toronto-born standup comedian, actor, screenwriter and singer-songwriter. They're best known for creating and starring on Netflix series Feel Good and Wayward as well as their 2023 Juno-nominated comedy special SAP.
Last year, Martin channeled their insightful storytelling into their debut album, I'm a TV. Co-written and produced by Canadian rock band the Darcys, Martin's songs explored nostalgic themes over gentle acoustic indie rock sounds.
Expect to see Martin combine their love of comedy and music on the Junos stage tonight.
Sarah McLachlan leans into '90s minimalism

With '90s minimalism back in a big way, it's no wonder that Sarah McLachlan stepped out in a low-cut, spaghetti strap floral gown on the orange carpet. The musician won a Juno yesterday for the adult contemporary album of the year.
Moments to look out for tonight
Hi everyone! I'm Kelsey Adams, an associate producer on the CBC Music team.
I'm on the ground in Hamilton sharing all the need-to-know moments from tonight's broadcast. I'm most excited for all the stellar performances and tributes in store for us!
There are a few history-making moments for you to keep an eye out for at these awards. The Beaches could make history and become the first all-women band to win group of the year three years in a row at the Junos. Last night, Begonia and Bahamas tied for their award (adult contemporary album of the year), which hasn't happened in 20 years.
We'll see a rare appearance from the icon of Canadian folk, Joni Mitchell, who is returning to the Junos stage for the first time in 45 years to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
It's the first Junos for country newcomer Cameron Whitcomb and he's already doing pretty well so far with five nominations, one win and the chance to take home two more awards tonight, for breakthrough artist of the year and Juno Fan Choice.
The Beaches deliver four distinct looks that hit

The Toronto quartet, nominated for group of the year and fresh off a win for rock album of the year, each leaned into their own distinct style.
From left: Jordan Miller wore a Kwame Adusei gown; Leandra Earl wore a leather jacket by Won Hundred; Kylie Miller wore a Sagradesa skirt; and Eliza Enman-McDaniel wore a gown by The Sei.
We're 30 minutes from show time!
The rumours on the ground are that the Junos have some big surprises in store this year.
We've already seen Prime Minister Mark Carney on the orange carpet, and Rush shared a cryptic message to their fans on Saturday that something "special" was going to happen tonight. So we'll just have to wait and see!

Hi! My name is Holly Gordon and I'm a digital producer for CBC Music, based in Halifax. I've been covering the Junos since 2014, seven in person and the rest from the office — including this year!
Tonight you'll see Billy Talent take the Junos stage as presenters, but at last night's gala the band had a different honour: receiving the Humanitarian Award, presented by Sum 41's Dave Baksh and Jason McCaslin.
Members Benjamin Kowalewicz, Ian D'Sa, Jonathan Gallant and Aaron Solowoniuk were recognized for their yearslong work with various charities, and their support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, an organization that's especially personal for the band as drummer Solowoniuk has been living with MS for over 25 years.
Kowalewicz concluded the band's moving acceptance speech by thanking punk rock for shaping their sense of community and teaching them "the delicate art form of not giving a f--k and giving a f--k at the same time."
