Over the years, we’ve shared many stories from the internet-famous dogpacking duo, John and Mira, including an in-depth guide to bikepacking with your canine friend, and we’ve seen a few variations of John’s dogpacking setups over the years. From mid-tail fat bikes to trailers, bikepacking with a dog requires a unique set of considerations, and it’s hard to imagine anyone more suited to help design the perfect dogpacking bike. In fact, in 2023, John had a custom Pinion dogpacking bike made, inspired by the Salsa Cycles Blackborow, and rode it on the Tour Divide.

John and Mira are back for more and will be lining up in Banff this Friday for the 2025 Tour Divide. This time, they will be riding a pre-production mid-tail cargo bike from Xtracycle that John helped design. The Xtracycle OmniTierra is a titanium mid-tail cargo bike with a custom titanium rear rack, fat bike hub spacing, internal dropper post routing, and plenty of mounting points. John’s build features a Pinion C1.12i Smart Shift drivetrain, Gates belt drive, a 29 x 2.6″ front tire and a 2.5″ rear (with clearance for 29 x 2.6/26 x 5.0″), TRP Hywire brakes, and a Wolf Tooth dropper post.

“It’s an exciting challenge to design a bicycle for such a specific use case,” said Steve Zourntos, General Manager at Xtracycle. “It gets us back to our roots of solving transportation challenges in demanding environments. John’s requirements pushed our design capabilities and reminded us why we got into this business in the first place – to create bicycles that truly expand what’s possible on two wheels. Though built for John and Mira’s very specific needs, we found that the resulting mid-tail format, capable of long distance, low maintenance, high cargo touring, has use for a lot of riders.”

John put together a short video overview of the new OmniTierra before loading it up for the 2025 Tour Divide. Watch that below:

As John and Mira test the new platform out on the Tour Divide, Xtracycle will gather feedback and make any final updates. After that, the bike will be available to the public, possibly as a pre-order/build to order basis depending on interest. If everything goes as planned, it will be available later this year.

Visit XtraCycle.com to learn more, and we’ll be sure to share more when orders open up.
