Wilson Department of English, University of Ottawa ENG 3375 -- Contemporary Literary Theory Week 11 A detailed introduction to Derrida’s superb deconstruction of Plato’s Phaedrus. The lecture begins by outlining the myth of the invention of writing that Socrates outlines near the end of that dialogue. Then, the lecture proceeds through Derrida’s analysis of why this supposedly marginal discussion of writing is, in fact, central to Plato’s entire enterprise. Finally, a comparison is made between the readings of Plato undertaken by Martin Heidegger and Leo Strauss.
