  • —Weight Its economy produced US$39.6 billion in 2025, about 0.5 percent of regional output, or US$3,598 per person. Only Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela report lower income per head among countries with 2025 data.
  • —Who governs Nasry Asfura of the conservative National Party has been president since 27 January 2026. Mireya Agüero is foreign minister as of October 2026.
  • —Blocs Member of the Organization of American States, CELAC, the Central American Integration System (SICA) and CAFTA-DR. Not a member of Mercosur, the Andean Community or CARICOM.
  • —Alliances The United States is the anchor: US$12.5 billion in two-way goods trade in 2025 and about 600 US personnel at Soto Cano Air Base. Honduras recognised China in March 2023 and has not restored Taiwan ties as of October 2026.
  • —Money Family remittances were about US$12.2 billion in 2025, roughly 31 percent of GDP. That is among the highest shares in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Honduras is small by output and large by exposure, a country of 11 million whose choices on the United States, Taiwan and China echo across Central America. This guide places it on the continental map as of October 2026: its weight, its blocs, its alliances and its peers.

Seen Honduras continent-wide, the country is a mid-sized voice with a heavy dependence on one partner, the United States. It is the second most populous country in Central America, yet only fourth by output among the six Spanish-speaking states.

For a US reader the stakes are concrete: a CAFTA-DR trade partner, a base for about 600 US personnel and a source of migrants. President Nasry Asfura has yet to decide on Taiwan, a choice that ties Honduras to the US-China rivalry.

Honduras on the Continental Map

Honduras had 11,005,850 people in 2025, about 1.7 percent of the 667 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, World Bank estimates show. It ranks 13th in the region by population, just behind the Dominican Republic.

Its economy produced US$39.6 billion in 2025, about 0.5 percent of the region’s US$7.4 trillion. Output per person was US$3,598, a level that only Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela undercut among the countries with 2025 World Bank data.

Money from abroad is the country’s defining link to the continent and the United States, with family remittances of about US$12.2 billion in 2025, according to the Central Bank of Honduras. That is roughly 31 percent of GDP, among the highest shares in the region.

Income is also unevenly shared. The World Bank’s Gini index, where higher means less equal, stood at 45.7 in 2024 and 48.9 in 2018.

Who Governs and Speaks for Honduras

Nasry Asfura of the conservative National Party has been president since 27 January 2026, for a four-year term. The electoral council declared him the winner on 24 December 2025, less than one point ahead of Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party.

Nasralla called the result a theft and demanded a vote-by-vote recount. Donald Trump had endorsed Asfura before the 30 November 2025 vote, which shapes how the government is read abroad.

The Foreign Ministry says foreign policy should be sovereign, autonomous and balanced. In July 2026 Foreign Minister Mireya Agüero named China, the United States, the European Union and Israel as current relationships.

The Blocs Honduras Belongs To

Honduras belongs to the Organization of American States, which counts all 35 independent states of the Americas as members. It also sits in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, or CELAC, whose tenth summit met in Colombia on 21 March 2026.

At that summit the CELAC chair passed from Colombia to Uruguay, and Honduras agreed with Peru to restore ambassadors. Peru had withdrawn its envoy in early 2023, citing interference by then-president Xiomara Castro.

In Central America the main forum is the Central American Integration System, or SICA. Its members are Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

Honduras holds no seat in the southern blocs. Mercosur lists Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and suspended Venezuela as states parties, and seven other countries as associates.

The Andean Community has four members: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. CARICOM has 15 member states and eight associate members, and Honduras is in neither group.

In September 2026 the foreign ministers of the 22 Ibero-American states chose Honduras, which had competed with Panama, to host the 2028 summit. Honduras will also hold the pro tempore secretariat for 2026 to 2028, the Ibero-American General Secretariat says.

Honduras has stepped back from one coalition. On 3 March 2026 it left the Hague Group, which coordinates legal action on alleged breaches of international law, saying it wanted a policy not aligned with blocs.

The United States as Anchor

The United States is the central partner, anchored in CAFTA-DR, the trade agreement signed on 5 August 2004. More than 200 US companies operate in Honduras, mainly in manufacturing, textiles and automotive components, the US State Department says.

US goods exports to Honduras were US$6.95 billion in 2025 and imports were US$5.50 billion, the US Census Bureau shows. Two-way goods trade came to about US$12.5 billion, nearly a third of Honduran GDP.

Security ties run through Soto Cano Air Base at Palmerola, a Honduran installation hosting about 600 US personnel of Joint Task Force-Bravo. The task force says its personnel are guests of the Honduran government.

In early July 2026 the foreign minister said relations with Washington go beyond Temporary Protected Status for Hondurans in the United States. She listed trade, migration and security cooperation among the other strands.

Taiwan, China and the Choice Ahead

Honduras moved recognition from Taiwan to China in March 2023, under then-president Xiomara Castro. A Honduras-China early harvest trade arrangement followed in February 2024, according to the US State Department.

During the 2025 campaign Asfura said Honduras should recognise Taipei, arguing that it had received more aid and trade under Taiwan ties. In May 2026 he told a Milken Institute conference in California that Castro-era agreements, including Huawei telecoms equipment, were under review.

In early July 2026 the foreign minister said any choice between Beijing and Taipei would rest on a strategic assessment, not on nostalgia or a campaign promise. She added that there had been no approaches to Taiwan and that discreet talks with China were under way.

Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras have moved recognition to Beijing over the past decade. Guatemala and Belize remain Taiwan’s only Central American allies, so a Honduran switch back would reverse the trend.

Israel, Europe and Other Partners

As president-elect, Asfura met Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in Jerusalem on 18 January 2026. Israel called Honduras a close friend and ally, and Asfura agreed to receive its ambassador’s credentials after his inauguration.

Free-trade agreements tie Honduras to partners beyond Washington. They include Canada, Chile, Colombia, the European Union, Mexico, Panama, Peru and South Korea, among others, the US State Department says.

Investor protection is a second channel of outside influence. Honduras left the World Bank’s ICSID arbitration convention in August 2024, and Asfura signed it again on 6 March 2026.

Membership returns once domestic ratification is complete, and a CAFTA-DR claim by a promoter of the special economic zones known as ZEDEs remains pending. The claim, filed in December 2022, seeks damages that could reach nearly US$11 billion.

On 18 October 2026 the Foreign Ministry announced a trip by Asfura to Italy. He is due to meet President Sergio Mattarella, Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the Vatican and officials of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

Disputes and Courts in the Neighbourhood

The International Court of Justice has shaped Honduras’s borders twice. In 1992 a chamber of the court placed the Gulf of Fonseca beyond a three-mile belt under the joint sovereignty of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

That judgment gave El Tigre island to Honduras and Meanguera and Meanguerita to El Salvador. In 2007 the court gave Honduras four Caribbean cays and drew a sea boundary with Nicaragua that ignored the 15th parallel.

A third case is open, brought by Belize in November 2022 to win sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes. On 19 March 2026 the court allowed Guatemala to take part as a non-party, over Honduras’s objection.

How Honduras Compares With Its Peers

Among the six Spanish-speaking states of Central America, Honduras is second by population and fourth by output. Income per person puts it above Nicaragua and below the other four.

  • Guatemala: 18.7 million people, US$123.3 billion GDP and US$6,598 per person in 2025.
  • Costa Rica: 5.2 million people, US$102.9 billion GDP and US$19,970 per person in 2025.
  • Panama: 4.6 million people, US$90.5 billion GDP and US$19,790 per person in 2025.
  • Honduras: 11.0 million people, US$39.6 billion GDP and US$3,598 per person in 2025.
  • El Salvador: 6.4 million people, US$36.7 billion GDP and US$5,767 per person in 2025.
  • Nicaragua: 7.0 million people, US$22.2 billion GDP and US$3,173 per person in 2025.

Costa Rica and Panama earn about five and a half times as much per person as Honduras. That gap helps explain why Honduras leans on remittances, manufacturing exports and outside partners for growth.

What It Means for US Readers

Investors face a market shaped by CAFTA-DR rules, where more than 200 US companies already operate. A completed return to ICSID would restore World Bank arbitration, but the pending claim of nearly US$11 billion shows the legal risk.

For Hondurans in the United States and their families, remittances are the direct link. Honduran press reported in September 2026 that Washington would not extend Temporary Protected Status, a decision that can reach household budgets in Honduras.

For readers who follow geopolitics, Honduras is a test of how far Washington can pull Central America away from Beijing. A move back to Taiwan would give Taipei three allies in the isthmus, with Guatemala and Belize.

Travellers should read the current US State Department advisory before booking, since security conditions vary between departments. The Rio Times guide to moving to Honduras covers visas, costs and safety for longer stays.

What Is Not Known

No decision on recognising Taiwan or China had been announced as of 19 October 2026. The review of Castro-era agreements, including Huawei equipment, has no published deadline.

It is not yet clear when ratification will complete the return to ICSID, or how the pending ZEDE claim will end. The court had not ruled on sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes as of 19 March 2026.

No change to the US presence at Soto Cano had been publicly announced as of 19 October 2026. The terms of any wider US-Honduras trade understanding beyond CAFTA-DR have not been published.
