News Americas, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Mon. Sept. 21, 2026: Guyana’s Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed is accusing the government of political victimization after two vehicles assigned to his office were impounded for more than two weeks – a situation he says directly contradicts recent public guidance from the country’s own Attorney General.

Mohamed says the vehicles, assigned to the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, have been parked at the Leonora Police Station compound in Region Three since September 3, exposed to the elements for over 16 days, according to Kaieteur News.

The impoundment comes just days after Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, SC, publicly stated that police officers should issue tickets for minor and ticketable traffic offences rather than detaining motorists or confiscating vehicles. Nandlall reportedly went further, warning that officers who unlawfully detain individuals or vehicles could face civil claims for false imprisonment, wrongful arrest, and constitutional violations.

Mohamed said the contrast between that guidance and his own office’s treatment was impossible to ignore. “It is both ironic and outrageous to hear Attorney General Nandlall speak about police officers issuing tickets for ticketable offences instead of detaining people or their vehicles,” Mohamed said, according to Kaieteur News. “That principle apparently applies to every Guyanese, except the Opposition Leader and his office.”

Mohamed said he has been unable to get a legal explanation for the impoundment, and that calls to the Commander of Police for Regional Division #3 have gone unanswered. He questioned whether other citizens who have criticized the government face similar treatment, framing the episode as a broader test of whether constitutional offices and ordinary Guyanese are protected equally under the law.

He also contrasted the current situation with when the PPP was in opposition, claiming the former APNU+AFC administration did not subject the party to comparable treatment — a claim News Americas has not independently verified. Mohamed said he is calling on international observers and the diplomatic community to take note of the situation, and confirmed the Opposition’s work would continue despite the impoundment.
