Galeão, the main Rio airport for international travel, plans more flights to New York, Dallas, Miami and Atlanta under its new operator, Spain’s Aena. The company presented the plan on Tuesday, 13 October, one week after it took control of the airport on 6 October.

For US travellers, it promises more direct ways into the city of Copacabana beach and the Christ the Redeemer statue as the southern summer approaches. Airlines, not the airport, will set the exact dates and the number of flights on each route.

What Aena Announced in Rio

Aena, a Madrid-listed airport group controlled by the Spanish state, presented the plan at a press conference at the airport. Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Tomé Franca, attended and backed the push for more foreign visitors.

Agência Brasil, the federal government’s news agency, reported more than 50 extra weekly flights to nine foreign cities by January 2027. Those nine are Paris, Miami, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Porto, Santiago, Córdoba, Atlanta and Panama City.

The agency listed nine more foreign cities for resumed or new flights in the same period. They are New York, Dallas, Toronto, Montreal, Asunción, Salta, Mendoza, Rosario and Lima.

Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports said the Rio airport handled 12.67 million passengers from January to August, up 10.9% on a year earlier. International travellers rose 13.8% to 4.32 million in the same period, the ministry added.

When the New Flights Start

Diário do Rio, a Rio news site, laid out a timeline for the first changes, starting in October 2026. More service to New York and Toronto and more flights to Paris and Miami come first.

In November, flights to Asunción in Paraguay are due to resume, with more to Frankfurt, Lisbon and Porto. December brings more service to Dallas, Montreal, Mendoza in Argentina and Lima in Peru.

The travel site Passageiro de Primeira published the route list Aena presented, which puts American Airlines on the New York, Miami and Dallas routes. Delta Air Lines adds New York in November and more Atlanta flights in December, the list shows.

Air Canada and Air Transat are listed for the Canadian routes, Lufthansa for Frankfurt and TAP Air Portugal for extra Lisbon and Porto flights. Panama’s Copa Airlines and the Chilean airlines LATAM, SKY and JetSMART add flights on Latin American routes.

Diário do Rio stressed that the dates and frequencies of each route depend on the airlines’ own schedules. Flights to 18 Brazilian destinations, including Porto Alegre, Fortaleza and Manaus, also increase in the summer high season, O Dia and Passageiro de Primeira reported.

What It Means for You

For a traveller in the United States, the plan means more ways to fly into the Rio airport from New York, Dallas, Miami and Atlanta. No fares were announced, so the effect on ticket prices is not known.

Gol, a Brazilian low-cost airline, has flown between Rio and New York’s JFK airport since July. Anyone planning a trip should check each route’s start date with the airline before booking.

Investors in Aena’s shares in Madrid also have a stake, since the company now runs the Rio airport as well as São Paulo’s Congonhas. The Rio contract runs until May 2039, the Ministry of Ports and Airports said.

A Hotel, a Hangar and New Jobs

Aena also presented R$1 billion (about US$200 million) of investments over three years, at about 5.02 reais to the US dollar on 14 October 2026. Agência Brasil reported that partners will put in that money, with Aena coordinating the projects.

The projects include a hotel of at least 232 rooms between the terminals, a test centre for Chinese carmaker BYD and a logistics warehouse. Gol plans a maintenance hangar for its aircraft at the Rio airport.

Aena expects the projects to create about 3,860 jobs over the three years, the Ministry of Ports and Airports said. Diário do Rio and O Dia, two Rio newspapers, reported the same figure.

Terminal 1, closed for ten years, will only be reconsidered if demand for new flights grows, Agência Brasil reported. Repairs to lifts and baggage belts are planned, but Aena did not say how much it will spend inside the terminals.

Limits on Rio’s Downtown Airport End in 2029

Santos Dumont, the smaller downtown Rio airport, has had a passenger cap since 2023 to push flights back to the Galeão airport. The limit stands at 6.5 million passengers a year, Agência Brasil reported.

Franca said the agreement lets the cap rise to 8.5 million in 2027 and 9.5 million in 2028, with no limit in 2029. If the government keeps a tighter cap, he said, Galeão’s contract will be rebalanced against the operator.

“Brazil needs more airports geared to international tourism,” Franca said, naming Galeão alongside São Paulo’s Guarulhos airport. Diário do Rio reported that he also argued for new airlines in Brazil and closer air links among South American countries.

What Is Not Known

Airlines can still change dates and frequencies before the new flights start. Whether Terminal 1 will ever reopen depends on new demand, and no date was given.

How many extra seats each route out of the Rio airport will get is not yet public. The timetable for the investment package and the works inside the terminals are also still to come.
