The FAZUA Ride 60 is a lightweight e-bike motor that we’ve seen incorporated into a number of electric mountain bikes, including the Transition Relay, the Santa Cruz Heckler SL, and the Focus JAM² SL. While the performance of the Ride 60 has generally been held in high regard, there was apparently room for improvement. Just a couple of days ago, FAZUA announced the Firmware Bundle 12 update, including the new KickOverrun feature, which aims to make it even better.

Obstacles like these are exactly the type of situation where many riders could enjoy the prolonged power boost of KickOverrun.

The highlight of the Firmware Bundle 12 update is undoubtedly the new KickOverrun feature. This aims to enhance the performance of the Ride 60 motor on technical climbs, where some e-bike motors can struggle. According to Fazua, “KickOverrun delivers precisely tuned bursts of power exactly when you need them — whether you’re climbing a steep pitch or navigating a technical trail.”

FAZUA tells us that the motor system learns riding patterns associated with technical climbing, such as putting a burst of power down before easing off to clear an obstacle. KickOverrun then activates when it senses these technical riding patterns, adding an extra power boost when you need it most.

Of course, most e-bike motors already have a bit of overrun, with power lasting a wee bit longer after the pedals stop turning. From the sound of it, KickOverrun aims to extend the power much further than the typical overrun, but only in those scenarios where it may actually be beneficial. Having ridden quite a few e-bikes, I can picture the exact riding scenarios and the associated riding patterns that FAZUA is mentioning. I can also picture myself getting hung up on a steep rock roll of rooty section because the motor overrun didn’t overrun quite long enough.

Additional Updates

FAZUA’s Firmware Bundle 12 also includes a few less exciting updates. We’re told that the new automatic sensor calibration happens each ride to maintain precise calibration permanently. Standby time has also been doubled and is now up to 10 minutes. This means that riders can take longer breaks without the need to restart as frequently. Additionally, a number of “stability enhancements” are intended to make the entire system smoother and more reliable.

How To Get the FAZUA Firmware Bundle 12

If you’re the owner of a bike equipped with a FAZUA Ride 60 motor and you’re interested in the KickOverrun feature, then you’ll be happy to know you can do this firmware update yourself. It looks like a simple three-step process.

  • Download FAZUA Toolbox 2.24 (desktop software) from fazua.com
  • Connect your e-bike via USB-C to your PC
  • Launch Toolbox and follow the prompts to install Firmware Bundle 12

If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, customers can bring their bikes to authorized FAZUA dealers to get it taken care of by the professionals.
