South Africa returned to action against Namibia at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek for the second ODI of the three-match series. The Proteas came into the contest with confidence after winning the opening game by 99 runs via the DLS method. Namibia won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping to make early inroads into the South African batting lineup. After losing an early wicket, however, the visitors recovered strongly and began putting Namibia under pressure.

Connor Esterhuizen delivers a spectacular maiden ODI century

Jack Brassell provided Namibia with an early breakthrough by dismissing previous-match centurion Jordan Hermann for 20 off 24 balls. Esterhuizen then took charge alongside Tony de Zorzi and began rebuilding the South African innings. The right-hander brought up his maiden ODI century before continuing his attacking display against the Namibian bowlers.

Connor Esterhuizen eventually departed for a spectacular 119 off 110 balls, smashing eight fours and six sixes, with Ruben Trumpelmann ending his innings. The century marked an important milestone in Esterhuizen’s international career. After Hermann’s early departure, he showed excellent composure to absorb the pressure before shifting gears and helping South Africa establish a strong position.

Esterhuizen and Tony de Zorzi put South Africa in command

Esterhuizen and De Zorzi completely shifted the momentum after Hermann’s dismissal. The pair added a huge 191-run partnership before Namibia finally broke through, with de Zorzi falling for a well-made 79 off 87 balls to Jack Brassell. Matthew Breetzke was dismissed for four shortly afterwards, giving Namibia some momentum in the closing stages.

However, South Africa remained in a strong position at 242/4 after 40 overs, with Dewald Brevis unbeaten on 9 and Jason Smith on 2. Jack Brassell was the pick of the Namibian bowlers with 2/37 from eight overs, while Nicol Loftie-Eaton claimed 1/26. South Africa now have 10 overs remaining to push towards a big total in the second ODI.

Connor Esterhuizen really putting his hand up for SA selection

I know this is only Namibia and Zimbabwe so plenty stiffer tests but you still have to perform whoever you play against.

Really wanted Connor Esterhuizen to play the Australia ODI series (and should anyway be in the Test XI ideally). Needed to get him to play some top flight teams in the next few months.
