The BBC drama starring Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle was a hit with viewers

Period drama fans have begged the BBC to bring back the “best thing" on TV.

Gentleman Jack, is set in 1830s Yorkshire and is based on the real-life diaries of Anne Lister. Suranne Jones takes on the lead role as landowner and industrialist Lister.

Her character is remembered as one of the first openly gay women in British history. Lister’s main love interest in the series is Anne Walker, portrayed by Sophie Rundle.

The series shows Lister’s day-to-day life at Shibden Hall, her family estate in Halifax. She inherited the property and oversaw its redesign, hiring a local architect and adding gothic features and gardens.

The series synopsis states: "It's 1832 in West Yorkshire, England -- the cradle of the evolving Industrial Revolution -- where landowner Anne Lister is determined to save her faded ancestral home.

"Shibden Hall, even if it means bucking society's expectations. In addition to reopening the coal mines, a part of Lister's plan to help her family is to marry well.

"But the charismatic, single-minded Lister -- who dresses head-to-toe in black and charms her way into high society -- has no intention of marrying a man.

"‘Gentleman Jack’ examines Lister's relationships with her family, servants, tenants and industrial rivals, and would-be wife.”

Created by Sally Wainwright, the show first aired in 2019 and both seasons of Gentleman Jack have received widespread critical praise, with an outstanding 92% rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics demonstrating this success.

The show came to an end four years ago but the BBC have sparked reaction from fans after posting a throwback clip to social media.

Many viewers took to the comment section and begged bosses to bring back the show for a third season as they claimed that it’s “the best thing" they’ve seen on TV. In the meantime, they can see seasons one and two on BBC iPlayer.

One fan pleaded: “Bring Back Gentleman Jack @gentlemanjackofficial.” Another said: “Season 1 of this show was one of the best things I've ever seen on TV!”

A third said: “Okay fine, I’ll rewatch all of Gentleman Jack!” Another said: “We need season 3 so baddd.”

Another commented: “There needs to be season 3. It's so good and should never have been axed.” One wrote: “Bring it BACK!.” Meanwhile one added: “We NEED a season 3!!”

Season 1 and 2 of Gentleman Jack is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
