While the gloomy British weather is showing a little sign of improvement, sunshine-deprived Brits can find comfort knowing one of Europe's sunniest cities is merely a three-hour flight away – ideal for those craving some sunshine.
Córdoba, situated in southern Spain, lies just an hour by train from both Málaga and Seville, nestled within Andalusia's mountainous and historically rich landscape. Holiday rental search engine Holidu named the city amongst the sunniest destinations in Europe, with a remarkable monthly average of 268.2 sunshine hours.
The weather forecast is currently showing highs of 22C for the week ahead, with the warm, sunny weather expected to continue into March. As the former capital of the Moorish Empire throughout the Islamic Golden Age in the 10th century, Córdoba houses countless beautifully preserved architectural treasures from that period.
Venture across the Roman Bridge and walk through the old town's cobbled streets, where you'll encounter elaborate structures including the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. This magnificent structure, built between 785-786, has striking arches and columns.
The structure was converted into a cathedral during the 13th century, though much of the mosaics and historic features have survived to the present day. Córdoba also boasts a Jewish Quarter (La Judería) which houses a 14th-century synagogue, providing insight into the period when Muslims, Jews and Christians coexisted within the city.
The Torre de la Calahorra, a medieval gate tower now converted into a 'living museum', contains a wealth of artefacts spanning different periods of the city's past. Following your tour of the exhibitions, you can climb to the tower's summit for stunning views of the historic centre.
Another unique feature of Córdoba is its historic courtyards, many dating back to Roman and Moorish periods. These courtyards, frequently decorated with flowers, plants and fountains, were designed as refreshing sanctuaries from the scorching heat.
While some courtyards welcome visitors year-round, the Festival of the Courtyards in May encourages private homeowners to open their spaces for public viewing.
Following a day of exploration, relax at the historic Hammam Al Ándalus, constructed on the location of 13th-century Arab baths. Each chamber is beautifully adorned with tiled surfaces and gentle illumination, creating a tranquil and genuine ambience.
After enjoying a traditional Hammam session, you can also arrange treatments such as a massage to soothe weary muscles. Andalusia boasts a thriving food culture, and whilst in Córdoba, make certain to sample local specialities including Córdoban salmorejo, a cooling soup crafted from regional tomatoes and lavishly dressed with olive oil and garlic. Alternatively, try the hearty Rabo de Toro, an oxtail stew originating from the city itself.
For an authentic taste of the city's heritage, find accommodation at one of its traditional hotels. The Hotel Las Casas de la Judería offers four-star boutique lodgings within the Jewish Quarter, positioned within easy reach of many key attractions. The property also features an attractive courtyard complete with swimming pool, perfect for escaping the Andalusian heat.
Another option worth exploring is the H10 Palacio Colomera, which faces onto a historical plaza and includes a rooftop terrace ideal for sipping cocktails whilst watching the sun dip below the city skyline.
