England fans hit the baseball stands

By Andy Lines in Atlanta

Hundreds of England fans in Atlanta for the World Cup went to a baseball game last night.

They travelled eight miles from downtown to watch the local team the Atlanta Braves, lose to the St Louis Cardinals.

Three Lions shirts could be seen throughout the impressive Truist Park stadium. And tickets cost as little as £14 to get in.

England supporter Gary Graham, 62, from Rochdale said: “It’s certainly a bit cheaper than watching England!

“I had no idea whatsoever what was going on but it was great fun all the same.

“And the beer was much cheaper than at the football.”

Tickets will be even cheaper tonight. The Braves take on the Cardinals again five hours after the game against Congo ends.

Braves bosses have offered Three Lions fans a 33 percent discount on tickets and are even providing some free transport to and from the game.

England: Who should take penalties in a shootout?

Penalties. I'm sorry, but it's knockout time, so we've got to acknowledge them.

We all know England's record in shootouts but we have at least had some joy in recent years.

Hopefully, they won't be needed later today. Or at any other point before July 19.

But just in case, our man John Cross has been looking at who should be stepping up for England - and who shouldn't. Read all about it right here.

England predicted XI for DR Congo clash

We're still a good few hours away from the official team news dropping.

But we've got you covered here on Mirror Football with our England predicted line-up for the DR Congo clash.

Our man John Cross reckons Djed Spence will come in at right-back, with Bukayo Saka retaining his place in the team alongside Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham returning to the No 10 spot.

The rest of the team have also had a go - have a read here and see if you agree!

Cross' predicted XI: Pickford; Spence, Konsa, Guehi, O'Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane

World Cup: At least two people die in celebrations in Mexico

Some sad news to bring you.

At least two people have died during celebrations in Mexico City after the country's national team advanced to the World Cup round of 16.

Local officials said a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died of asphyxiation on Wednesday.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths have not yet been confirmed.

Further details can be found here.

Harry Kane sent Ballon d'Or warning

Harry Kane knows winning the World Cup with England could propel him to Ballon d'Or glory — but he's been told it would be a travesty if anybody other than Michael Olise wins the coveted award.

The England captain has enjoyed another sensational season for both club and country, plundering 66 goals in 56 games for Bayern Munich to help the German giants land a second successive Bundesliga title before becoming England's all-time World Cup goalscorer with strikes against Croatia and Panama.

Kane's imperious form has seen him emerge as a serious contender to become the first English winner of the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen back in 2021.

But competition to land the golden gong will be fierce — and could even include a handful of players Kane knows all too well.

Kane and Olise have linked up to devastating effect for Bayern Munich in Germany this term, with the former Crystal Palace winger also impressing for France at the World Cup.

And the former France defender, Willy Sagnol, says Olise failing to win the award would prove there is something "seriously wrong" with football - because the 24-year-old is the best player in the world right now.

England team news

So, the bad news is Reece James and Jarrel Quansah are definitely out, leaving Thomas Tuchel with a major selection issue at right-back. One of Djed Spence or Ezri Konsa will deputise.

The good news is that Tuchel reckons both could be back available for a potential Round of 16 clash with Mexico IF England get through tonight.

Elsewhere, Declan Rice could return after missing the 2-0 win over Panama.

And Bukayo Saka is good to go again after making his first start of the World Cup last time out.
