Elon Musk Floats Potential SpaceX-Tesla Merger Under One Company

So, who helped provide some of the technology? The answer is another company led by multi-billionaire Elon Musk: SpaceX. The rocket and aerospace company has delivered its own share of remarkable breakthroughs, from making reusable spacecraft a practical reality to expanding high-speed Starlink internet into some of the planet’s most isolated regions.

But what would happen if these two Musk-led companies became one?

That is the possibility Musk is now openly promoting—and history has made betting against him a risky proposition. During SpaceX’s quarterly earnings call with investors and analysts on Tuesday, Musk suggested that the long-discussed combination of SpaceX and Tesla could be moving closer to reality:

Elon Musk today on a potential merger between SpaceX and Tesla:

“Both Tesla and SpaceX have formed special committees at the request of shareholders. Because I’m a conflicted party I can’t be in on these discussions. I don’t think we should assume that a merger is a certainty.… pic.twitter.com/Aerc1PxA8P

“Both Tesla and SpaceX have formed special committees at the request of shareholders. Because I’m a conflicted party I can’t be in on these discussions. I don’t think we should assume that a merger is a certainty. Do I think it would be a good idea? Yes. But at the end of the day, shareholders have to be supportive of this. The special committees have not reached an agreement on any transaction, and it doesn’t mean they will, but there is a lot of gained from cooperating on SI, chip design, robots, mass or orbit, connectivity. I think it would be a good idea.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who fought aggressively against the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, may not welcome the development. However, Tesla relocated from California to Texas in 2021, followed by SpaceX in 2024, potentially limiting his influence over any deal.

Musk may not have the authority to determine the final outcome, but his views are unlikely to be ignored. After all, he has used his business instincts to become the world’s richest man:

As the leader of both companies, Musk has previously floated the idea of joining them, citing the increasing technological and operational overlap between Tesla and SpaceX.

After SpaceX released its quarterly results and Musk discussed the potential merger during Tuesday’s investor call, SpaceX shares climbed as much as 8% in after-hours trading.

“I think it would be a good idea, but it’s really up to the special committees of both companies,” Musk said. “Because I’m a conflicted party, I can’t actually be in the discussions of the special committees.”

SpaceX could continue to prosper independently, but a successful merger could create an even larger financial engine. That prospect may also benefit American children if Musk follows through on his reported plan to distribute part of his enormous fortune. As RedState’s Kyle Becker reported Monday, Musk intends to share at least some of his wealth:

Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America.

This will be the first of many.

A combined SpaceX-Tesla company would immediately rank among the largest corporations ever assembled, though it would not claim the top spot at once. Its estimated market value could reach approximately $3.2 trillion to $3.5 trillion. Nvidia, the leading designer and maker of AI chips, would still hold the crown with a valuation above $5 trillion, while Microsoft, Apple, and Alphabet would remain close competitors.

Still, if the merger goes ahead, Nvidia might have good reason to worry that its position as the world’s most valuable company will not last.

Of course, there is still one crucial question: What would the new company be called? SpaceTeslaX, SpaceTex, TeslaX Goes to Space, or perhaps TexX? The naming possibilities are nearly limitless.
