The US President will reportedly do 'everything he can' to save his close friend Gianni Infantino's job after calls for him to go following his plan to sell stakes of FIFA

Donald Trump 'will do everything he can' to save Gianni Infantino's job as FIFA president, according to insiders.

Infantino's job is under threat after his plan to sell off a stake in a new FIFA organisation sparked furious backlash.

The scheme has been abandoned after the backlash, with many teams saying they would boycott the World Cup if it were to go ahead.

However, according to a senior administration official close to the pair the president is very fond of Infantino after he helped the US host the “best World Cup ever” and will support his bid to remain as FIFA chief, despite calls for him to go.

Infantino's relationship with Trump has been regularly questioned, especially after the recent World Cup.

During this year's tournament, co-hosted by the US, Trump said he phoned the FIFA chief to complain after a red card was given to the USA's star striker.

His one-match ban was then suspended, sparking debates about political interference in the game.

“Gianni helped us a lot to deliver the best World Cup ever. The president likes him a lot.

"I am sure the president will do everything possible to help him,” the source told The Telegraph.

“I don’t think the president will change his mind on him, because he is a loyal person. Gianni really delivered the World Cup for the United States. We value that.”

Others have claimed that the relationship between the pair has gone too far.

David Davies, who held several senior roles at the FA between 1994 and 2006 said: "My instinct is that it's gone too far. What's happening has gone too far for him."

He added that Infantino is a "political-style" FIFA boss, who had been "seduced for too long" by Donald Trump.

Despite reports that Trump will support Infantino as his job is on the line, in the UK, the FIFA president does not have the same backing from political leaders.

Andy Burnham has repeated his belief that Infantino is "not the right man to lead football" and urges him to stand down from his role.

It is understood that the English FA are preparing a letter withdrawing its support for Infantino's re-election, following the Welsh FA.

Despite these withdrawals, there are currently no other candidates that have declared to challenge him.
