Direct tax collections rise sharply to Rs 8.11 lakh crore; non-corporate taxes lead

India's net direct tax collections jumped 23.09% to Rs 8.11 lakh crore by August 10, 2026, up from Rs 6.59 lakh crore in the same period last year, data released by the income tax department showed.The latest figures put the increase in net tax receipts at Rs 1.52 lakh crore over the comparable period of 2025.

The rise came from higher collections across key categories, with non-corporate taxes accounting for the largest share of net direct tax receipts.Before refunds, gross direct tax collections had reached Rs 9.55 lakh crore by August 10, compared with Rs 7.97 lakh crore a year earlier. This marked a year-on-year increase of 19.75%.Non-corporate tax collections climbed to Rs 5.07 lakh crore during the period, compared with Rs 4.11 lakh crore last year, an increase of around 23.4%.

The category covers taxes paid by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, firms, associations of persons, bodies of individuals, local authorities and artificial juridical persons.Corporate tax collections also recorded a strong rise. Net collections from corporate tax increased to Rs 2.70 lakh crore from Rs 2.26 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year, representing growth of around 19.8%.Another significant increase was recorded in Securities Transaction Tax (STT).

Collections from STT rose to Rs 33,823.74 crore, compared with Rs 22,354.31 crore a year earlier.However, net collections under other taxes registered a marginal decline, according to the data.At the same time, refunds increased during the period. The government issued Rs 1.43 lakh crore in refunds as of August 10, 2026, up 3.79% from Rs 1.38 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year.The collection figures for the early months of FY 2026-27 show contributions from both corporate and non-corporate tax segments. Net direct tax collections had stood at Rs 6.59 lakh crore as of August 10, 2025.
