Strong Demand Across Key Markets

Figures released by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) highlight the United States as the main driver of incoming travel, accounting for over 966,000 air arrivals and a 4.9% increase compared to previous figures.

Canada demonstrated the most impressive momentum in the region, registering a surge of 26.5%. Meanwhile, Mexico consolidated its position as Costa Rica’s leading Latin American source market, growing by 8.4%.

In Europe, key markets including Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom recorded growth rates that surpassed overall averages.

Airport Disparities and Low-Season Outlook

Despite the positive half-year total, industry leaders note that growth has been unevenly distributed. Arrival increases were heavily concentrated at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (Liberia), while Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José posted more modest expansion.

The Proimagen Costa Rica Association has expressed caution regarding performance for the second half of the year, citing several headwind factors:

  • The typical decline in visitor volume during the low season
  • A noticeable drop in preliminary travel inquiries
  • Ongoing global economic uncertainty and geopolitical instability
  • Heightened competition from competing regional destinations

Structural Challenges to Competitiveness

In addition to temporary market fluctuations, industry representatives point to long-standing structural challenges affecting Costa Rica’s competitiveness on the international stage:

  • High Operating Costs: High expenses for tourism operators and visitors alike
  • Currency Appreciation: The strengthening of the Costa Rican colón against the U.S. dollar
  • Infrastructure Bottlenecks: Ongoing limitations in transportation networks and local connectivity

To mitigate these pressures, Proimagen Costa Rica has reinforced its international marketing initiatives. Recent efforts include hosting 210 travel agents from target markets, launching the official Proimagen Costa Rica Podcast, and executing targeted Road Shows in key regions.
