The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday (October 15, 2026) accused Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and his allies of attempting to turn the Supreme Court premises “into a protest site” and using “mob pressure to intimidate the judiciary”.

On Monday, Mr. Gandhi and other Opposition leaders marched to the Supreme Court and submitted a petition on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls issue.

At a press conference, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that, in protest against the “serious act”, Supreme Court advocates submitted a signed memorandum. “Rahul Gandhi has been named as a respondent in the petition, and the Supreme Court has issued a notice in the matter seeking a response from him,” he said.

Referring to a controversial post uploaded on the official X account of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday, which was subsequently deleted and the person responsible removed from the position, Mr. Bhatia alleged that such an act reflected Mr. Gandhi’s “mindset”.

He also targeted Mr. Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over allegations of misconduct towards female police personnel during the protests. “Concern for women’s dignity arises only when the women belong to the Gandhi family,” he alleged.

During the press conference, the BJP leader welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgment upholding the Madras High Court’s ruling that “a person who embraces Islam cannot claim the status of backward class (Muslim)”.

“The Supreme Court has clarified that only individuals professing Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism can be recognised as members of a Scheduled Caste,” he said. The BJP leader accused the Congress and its allies of playing “appeasement” politics.
