Originally aired on the BBC’s Nationwide series in the mid-1970s, “BIG JIM’s Big BOOZY Bike Trip to Braemar” is an entertaining seven-minute video following a charismatic farmer on a rugged backcountry ride with a handful of whisky stops en route. Watch it here…

Big Jim Collie was a farmer who lived in a bothy set at the foot of Scotland’s beautiful Cairngorms, and he had a secret weapon. “The Lairig Flyer,” as it was known, was his rickety old bicycle that carried him up through the Lairig Ghru, the highest mountain pass in the highest range in Britain, more than 100 times. BIG JIM’s Big BOOZY Bike Trip to Braemar is a charming seven-minute video that follows one such journey to visit a friend in 1975.

The video, which premiered on BBC One in January of 1976, delightfully captures a rough 22-mile ride, complete with several whisky and beer stops along the way. Jim’s meandering but impressive journey and his quietly funny spirit are perfectly captured when reporter Luke Casey remarks that he’s impressed the bike stands up to the route, and Jim quips back, “Oh, it doesn’t!” Watch it above.
