The success formula of Bhagyaraj’s early hit movies was fundamentally simple. His films were structured around personal or situational conflicts arising in the lives of ordinary individuals, a screenplay moving toward the resolution of that conflict, good songs, and plenty of situational comedy sprinkled throughout, writes K. Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman said: “Bhagyaraj was an encyclopedia in screenplay. The films he took, the subjects he touched upon, his screenplay was welcomed by audience. Bhagyaraj was the first student of the legendary director K. Bharathiraja and he gave several hit films and touched phenomenal heights. His passing came as a huge shock.”

Founder president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi Thol Thirumavalavan said: “He had the pride of being the foremost student of the veteran director K. Bharathiraja. He was one of the towering figures in the world of cinema. AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran referred to him as his “film heir” (or kalai ulaga vaarisu). He earned the reputation of being one of the finest screenplay writers. Many would look forward to his films.”

Actor Rajnikanth paid homage at Bhagyaraj’s residence. Director Mani Ratnam, actors Radhika, Prabhu, Goundamani, Ramarajan, Arjun, Jayaram paid their respects to the mortal remains of the veteran filmmaker. Actor Mammootty posted heartfelt condolences on X.

Actor Rajinikanth said: “For fifty years, in the Tamil film industry, through his extraordinary talent and creativity, he has given many successful films and earned an indelible place in the hearts of Tamil people. His sudden passing has caused immense sorrow and shock. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul find peace.”

Actors Nasser, Sathyaraj and director Lokesh Kanagaraj came also paid their respects.

Tamil Maanila Congress president G.K. Vasan expressed deep sorrow over the demise of veteran filmmaker and actor K. Bhagyaraj. In his condolence message, Mr. Vasan hailed Bhagyaraj’s remarkable contributions as a director, actor, screenwriter, writer, producer, composer, journalist and politician, noting that his innovative storytelling and lasting impact on Tamil cinema earned him widespread admiration. He also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Bhagyaraj’s family, the film fraternity and his fans.

The Tamil Film Active Producers Association has expressed profound grief over the passing of legendary filmmaker, screenwriter and actor K. Bhagyaraj, a legend whose extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema will remain timeless.

Describing as a ‘screenplay king’, the association said his screenplays travelled across languages through remakes. He redefined screenplay writing with his unmatched creativity, wit, and deep understanding of human emotions. His films entertained generations while inspiring countless filmmakers and screenwriters to look at storytelling through a fresh and intelligent lens. Describing his demise as an irreparable loss to the film industry, TFAPA extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and millions of admirers worldwide.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay pays homage to the mortal remains of the late filmmaker. The CM’s office earlier in the day had announced, “In tribute to Thiru. K. Bhagyaraj’s contributions to the film industry and as a mark of respect, state honors will be accorded to his final journey.”

Chief Minister of Kerala, V.D. Satheesan said: “Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran Tamil actor, director, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj. Revered as the “Screenplay King,” he redefined storytelling in Tamil cinema with his unique creative vision and unforgettable performances. He also shared a special bond with Malayalam cinema — his memorable role in Mr. Marumakan continues to be fondly remembered by fans in #Keralam. His immense contributions to Indian cinema will continue to inspire generations. Heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and countless fans. May his soul rest in peace.”

Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said he was deeply saddened by the passing of the renowned director, actor, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj. “He left a unique mark in the Tamil film world and earned the love of Malayalis through his excellent work. His demise is an irreplaceable loss to the film industry and the cultural sector,” he said.

AMMK general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran recalled Bhagyaraj’s contributions to the film world and said he was a mentor of many young directors.

The office of C. Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of TamilNadu posted on X, “Upon learning of the passing of Thiru. K. Bhagyaraj, the preeminent director, actor, screenwriter, dialogue writer, and music composer of Tamil cinema, who left an indelible mark through his multifaceted talents, I am filled with profound shock and deep sorrow. Through films that reflect unique storytelling, humor-infused performances, and the profound emotions of rural life and family relationships, Thiru. K. Bhagyaraj has carved an everlasting place in the hearts of Tamil people. His contributions to the Tamil film world are immeasurable. 

Each of his creations will endure forever as timeless memories that entertain while speaking to humanity and social values. His demise is an irreplaceable loss to Tamil cinema. I convey my deepest condolences and sympathies to his grieving family, relatives, friends, members of the film industry, and fans. I pray that his soul rests in peace at the divine feet of the Lord.

Actor Chiranjeevi said: “Deeply shocked and heartbroken beyond words. Just the day before yesterday, we were together in Goa at Kush’s wedding, laughing, sharing jokes, and taking pictures. Bhagyaraj garu was full of life and joy. To wake up to the news of his passing this morning is simply unbelievable.”

“A brilliant filmmaker, exceptional screenplay writer, and fine actor, his contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered.

My heartfelt condolences to Poornima ji, Shanthanu and the entire family. May God give them the strength to bear this irreparable loss. Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will be deeply missed.”

Actor Simran: “The news of K. Bhagyaraj sir’s passing is truly heartbreaking. He was a visionary filmmaker, brilliant storyteller, and exceptional actor. He brought laughter, warmth, and meaningful social messages through his work. Tamil cinema has lost one of its finest creative minds.”

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan said: “The passing of Mr. K. Bhagyaraj, the pioneer director of the Tamil film world, an outstanding actor, a unique screenwriter, and a writer, brings immense sorrow.

Having recently completed his 50-year landmark journey in the film industry and being specially praised by members of the film world and fans alike, his demise is an irreplaceable loss to the Tamil film industry.”

Politician K. Annamalai posted on X, “The news of the passing away of Mr. K. Bhagyaraj, a great director, actor and one of the greatest screenwriters in India, due to ill health, is deeply shocking and saddening. He had won the love of the people of Tamil Nadu through his films. He was a simple and kind man. I express my deepest condolences to Mr. Bhagyaraj’s family and relatives. I pray to God that his soul may rest in peace.”

The general secretary of the All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AIPTMMK), V.K. Sasikala, in a message, pointed out that Bhagyaraj had bagged several awards including the life time achievement award and “Filmfare” award. Besides being an “ardent fan” of M.G, Ramachandran. Bhagyaraj had respect for Jayalalithaa, Ms. Sasikala said, remembering the period in which he and she were in politics together.

D. Ravikumar, MP, said: “The news of the passing of actor and director Bhagyaraj due to a heart attack has come as a shock. Even in films made primarily for commercial entertainment, he consistently conveyed ideas that encouraged social reform. Death has snatched him away suddenly. The void created by his passing in Tamil cinema can never truly be filled.”

Mr. Stalin said, “Bhagyaraj made his mark as the emperor of unfinished screenplays, as the realistic hero who captivated everyone, as a writer endowed with the ability to navigate complex situations with brief dialogues, and as an extraordinary director who triumphed in every aspect. Actor Rohini Molleti: “India’s legendary screenwriter, director, and actor Bhagyaraj has passed away. I pay my heartfelt tributes to him and extend my deepest condolences to his family. Whenever we met, he would fondly call me “Pavunu.” Sir, when will we ever see a storyteller like you again?”

Actor Harish Kalyan said: “Bhagyaraj’s films and his writing will live on in our hearts forever. His legacy of brilliant films and unforgettable performances will continue to guide and inspire us forever.”

Actor Suhasini said: “He happily attended actor Khushbu’s daughter’s wedding in Goa. He was very happy. This morning, after returning home from his regular walk, he complained of mild chest pain. He was rushed to the hospital, but passed away.”

Venkatesh Daggubati said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Bhagyaraj Sir. His work transcended languages and touched the hearts of millions. I feel fortunate to have been a part of films like Sundarakanda and Abbaigaru, which were born from his remarkable storytelling. Indian cinema has lost one of its finest filmmakers. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers.”

Film producer G. Dhananjheyan said: “Deeply shocked and devastated to know the sudden demise of legendary Screenplay writer & Director #KBhagyaraj sir, my great friend & support in the film industry for many years. Couldn’t believe this happened so soon.”

Choreographer, actor and director Raghava Lawrence said that he was deeply saddened by the demise of director Bhagyaraj. “His contribution to cinema is unforgettable, and his work has inspired generations. This is a great loss to the film industry,” he said.

Actor Sibi Sathyaraj said the king of screenplay is no more. “Deeply saddened to hear about the sudden demise of K. Bhagyaraj sir. A huge loss to the film industry. My deepest condolences to his family,friends and fans,” he posted on X.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, condoled the death of the famous actor and director K. Bhagyaraj.

He said that the passing away of veteran Tamil film director and writer is a great loss to the world of cinema.

“His unique storytelling, creative brilliance and immense contribution to Tamil cinema have earned him a special place in the hearts of audiences. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and film lovers,” he said.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and countless admirers. May his soul rest in peace,” he further added.

Actor, director, writer, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj, whose mastery of screenplays was widely acknowledged and who was known for creating a storytelling formula that influenced generations of filmmakers, died today.
