Joining the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) will give BDC a closer and earlier look at the technology needs, investment trends and market opportunities among the 32 NATO member nations, allowing it to share that information and relevant contacts with Canadian companies eyeing funding, partnerships and new markets, Peter Dawe, BDC’s senior vice-president of defence strategy, said.

He said BDC’s presence in the network will help Canada shore up its role and presence in NATO’s innovation ecosystem and that he welcomes “broader Canadian representation.”

DIANA was created to identify dual-use technologies that can address defence and security challenges outlined by NATO members, including artificial intelligence, autonomous and unmanned systems such as drones and maritime and space-based capabilities.

Canada recently launched a drone marketplace to create a database of qualified autonomous systems suppliers to help the Canadian military test and procure technologies faster. Ottawa has already started approving suppliers, with businesses from Canada, Europe and the United States making the cut.

Canada operates two DIANA accelerator hubs in Dartmouth, N.S., and Waterloo, Ont., and 22 Canadian companies were chosen to join DIANA’s 2026 cohort and seven in 2025.

“Canada has consistently been a strong contributor to the program, reflecting the depth of Canada’s dual-use and defence innovation ecosystem,” Dawe said.

He also said BDC’s membership in DIANA will complement the bank’s $6-billion defence platform, which provides financing, investment and advisory for Canadian defence and dual-use tech businesses.

At Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Canada Investment Summit on Tuesday, BDC announced its plan to spend $1 billion on supporting high-growth and early stage deep tech companies in Canada and beyond.

“As NATO countries increase investment in defence and security, it is important that Canadian companies are connected to the networks, investors and partners helping shape the next generation of technologies,” Dawe said.
