Rolling into Antelope Wells at 6:00 p.m. local time, Andrew Onermaa of Arkansas has won the Tour Divide singlespeed race with an unofficial time of 15 days and 11 hours (15d:10h:00m). Even more impressive is that Onermaa came very close to the longstanding singlespeed record time that Chris Plesko set back in 2016 (15d:08h:04m)—he was even ahead of the CP pace dot for much of the race.
Onermaa is best known in the bikepacking community for hosting the Bikepack Racing podcast, as well as putting together the Doom bikepacking race in the backcountry of the Ozarks. Onermaa races both geared bikes and singlespeeds, and clearly, the one-geared bike suits him well.
The men’s singlespeed race came down to a two-man contest between Onermaa and Zack Friendy (Freundlich) as the two distanced themselves from the rest of the one-gear field early on in the event.
In the early days of the event, Onermaa was sleeping slightly longer than his competitor but riding faster during the day. He had a slight lead on Friendly in the early days until the two came back together just outside of Boulder, Wyoming, about 1,200 miles in. The two made the push across the Great Divide Basin on the same day, just a few miles apart, and both chose to spend the next night in Wamsutter. While Friendly jumped ahead slightly by riding past Steamboat the next day, Onermaa was quick to catch up. The two rode together, or very near each other, into Silverthorn the following day, but Onerma rode a bit later into the night, took a shorter sleep, and never looked back. He continued to increase his lead by a little bit each day for the following days and was able to hold onto the gap on the final flat run to the border.
Onermaa was riding a custom Slow Southern Steel Warhorn with a 32×18 gear ratio. Friendly was on an Esker Hayduke Ti with a 32×16 gear ratio and oval chainring. Congrats, Andrew, on an amazing ride!
