Allahabad high court rejects Atiq Ahmed's eldest son Mohammad Umar's bail plea

PRAYAGRAJ: The Allahabad high court on Monday rejected the bail application of Mohammad Umar, eldest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, in a case involving alleged demands for money, extortion and threats to life.Justice Avnish Saxena rejected Umar's bail plea in the case, in which an FIR was lodged at Khuldabad police station on April 26, 2023, on a complaint by Mohd Muslim.According to the FIR, Umar allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh from Muslim, along with threats of kidnapping, assault and harm to his life.Ali Ahmad, Asad Kalia, Mohd Nasrat and two others were also named as accused in the case.Umar is currently lodged in Lucknow jail.

Earlier granted parole

The high court's order comes weeks after Umar and his younger brother Ali were granted parole to attend the burial of their youngest brother Abaan Ahmed, who was killed in a road accident in Jhansi.Abaan, 20, and his friend Sonu were killed when their SUV crashed into a road divider in Jhansi district on August 6. The accident took place on the Kanpur-Jhansi road in the Poonch area.Police said the SUV was travelling from Prayagraj towards Jhansi when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Three other occupants were injured in the crash.Umar and Ali were allowed to attend Abaan's last rites following a petition filed by Atiq Ahmed's sister Parveen Qureshi.

Atiq Ahmed family has faced multiple deaths since 2023

Abaan was the youngest of Atiq Ahmed's five sons and was the twin brother of Ahjam. His death came more than three years after the killing of his elder brother Asad Ahmed near Jhansi.Asad, 19, and his alleged associate Ghulam were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force near Jhansi on April 13, 2023.Asad was wanted in connection with the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal.Two days later, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj while being taken to a hospital for a medical examination.Three assailants posing as journalists opened fire on the two brothers at close range.Atiq Ahmed's sons Ali and Umar are currently lodged in separate jails in Uttar Pradesh.(With inputs from PTI)
