The 31-year-old niece of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was found dead at her residence in West Bengal’s Birbhum on Tuesday (September 1, 2026).
Police said she was the daughter of one of Ms. Banerjee’s maternal cousins, who was also a local Trinamool Congress leader in Birbhum’s Kusumba village under the Rampurhat police station.

According to the police, the incident took place at noon when her body was discovered by family members on the second floor of her house. However, no note has yet been found from her belongings.
Rampurhat police inspector Santanu Adhikary said her family members stated that she had been suffering from severe depression for the last few years. She was undergoing psychiatric treatment and medication regularly. She got married in 2012. The victim was probably stressed due to the ongoing divorce case, he said.
She had been working at the Bolpur Government High School as a Group-C staff. But she lost her job in March 2023 after the Calcutta High Court terminated the services of several employees over alleged irregularities in the West Bengal School Service Commission examination in 2016. Later, the Supreme Court also cancelled the entire panel of 2016 SSC examination, leading to the loss of jobs of nearly 26,000 candidates.
“Her family members and relatives are being questioned. An initial unnatural death report has been lodged. The body has been sent for autopsy,” said Mr. Adhikary.
