Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing renewed scrutiny after denying that he or any member of his family has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
During Sunday’s broadcast of “Meet the Press,” NBC host Kristen Welker asked El-Sayed whether he wanted to “set the record straight” about allegations linking his family to the controversial Islamist organization.
“No,” El-Sayed responded.
Welker pressed him further, asking, “No, you don’t have any ties, and your family doesn’t?”
El-Sayed again answered, “No,” then accused his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, of promoting Islamophobic attacks against him and his relatives.
But El-Sayed’s half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, has said their mother was an active member of the Muslim Brotherhood.
“Had an amazing talk with my mom about her activism in the Muslim Brotherhood during the early 70s while she was in college #respect,” Abdelhadi wrote in a 2012 post on X, according to reporting first published by the Washington Free Beacon.

Their mother, Fatten Elkomy, attended Egypt’s Alexandria University. A Brookings Institution report has said the university had significant Muslim Brotherhood activity during the 1970s.
Abdelhadi, a professor at the University of Chicago, wrote in another 2012 post: “My family has long been MB, but I’ve always felt that it has navigated the political sphere poorly/destructively.”
In a separate post from 2013, she wrote, “Praying for all my family that supports the #MB in #Egypt. Lie low, stay safe.”
An El-Sayed campaign spokesperson told Fox News, “Abdul is a dad and a doctor. He has spent his entire career working to keep Michiganders healthy and safe.
“Independent fact checkers have repeatedly debunked Mike’s lies, but their campaign continues to use bad faith attacks on Abdul’s faith and family. Mike wants to distract from Trump’s agenda that is terrorizing Michigan families at the pump and at the grocery store.”
The campaign has also maintained that the Muslim Brotherhood allegations were “debunked as racist and untrue.”
NBC News had not immediately responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
