Pakistan’s struggles in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 continued on Tuesday after they suffered a 90-run defeat to West Indies in the first Test of the two-match series at the Brian Lara Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad. The result not only handed the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series but also ensured Pakistan remained rooted to the bottom of the updated WTC standings.

Set a challenging target of 211 on a testing surface, Pakistan’s batting lineup once again failed to deliver under pressure. While captain Babar Azam fought valiantly with an unbeaten half-century, the visitors never looked in control of the chase as West Indies’ pace attack dismantled the batting order to secure a memorable victory.

West Indies overpower Pakistan to take series lead

West Indies began the fourth day with a healthy lead and extended it further through a late counter-attacking cameo from Shamar Joseph, who blasted 38 off just 27 deliveries. His quick runs helped the hosts post 181 in their second innings and set Pakistan a target of 211.

The chase quickly unravelled as Jayden Seales produced a sensational spell, finishing with figures of 5/20. Kemar Roach and Player of the Match Justin Greaves provided excellent support as wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals.

Pakistan’s only resistance came from skipper Babar, who remained unbeaten on 58 with nine boundaries. He found little support from the other end, although No.11 Mohammad Abbas briefly delayed the inevitable with a fighting 23. Pakistan were eventually bowled out well short of the target, suffering their fourth defeat in five matches in the ongoing WTC cycle.

Pakistan remain ninth in updated WTC 2025-27 standings

The defeat leaves Pakistan at the bottom of the World Test Championship standings with just one win from five matches. Their points percentage (PCT) dropped further to 6.67, keeping them in ninth place.

West Indies, meanwhile, earned their second victory of the cycle but remain eighth despite improving their tally to 30 points. Australia continue to dominate the standings with seven wins from eight Tests and a PCT of 87.50, while South Africa and New Zealand occupy the second and third positions respectively.

Bangladesh remain fourth after an impressive start to the cycle, while India are placed fifth with four wins, four defeats and one draw from nine Tests. Sri Lanka and England occupy the sixth and seventh spots respectively.
