A referee labelled "suspect" by United States President Donald Trump has been praised by FIFA referees’ chief Pierluigi Collina.

Trump criticised Brazilian referee Raphael Claus yesterday for his decision to show US striker Folarin Balogun a red card against Bosnia, describing him as "a little bit suspect if you check his past."

FIFA has issued a statement in response praising Claus as "one of the world’s leading professional referees" and "a valued member of Team One (the referees team) at the FIFA World Cup".

And Collina, a legendary ex-referee once known within the game as 'the sheriff', said: "Raphael Claus is refereeing at his second FIFA World Cup having been with us in Qatar in 2022.

"He is an experienced and highly respected referee and we maintain full confidence in him as a trusted match official."

Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that yesterday's 1-0 knockout defeat to Portugal was his "last" World Cup game - but refused to be drawn on his international future amid calls for him to retire.

Belgium celebrated a stunning 4-1 win over the United States at Seattle Stadium with a dance routine mimicking President Donald Trump's signature moves in what seemed a deliberate dig.

The Red Devils knocked the USA out of their home World Cup, capitalising on three defensive blunders before adding a fourth late on to wrap up a commanding win. Tempers were already fraying ahead of kick-off after FIFA controversially permitted USA striker Folarin Balogun to feature despite receiving a red card in the previous round.

Trump publicly backed FIFA's ruling at the Oval Office on Monday, and admitted to having spoken with Gianni Infantino prior to the lifted suspension being announced.

England's captain has finally got his voice back after sounding breathless in post-match interviews following the dramatic Mexico win - and has sent a message to fans in a new video posted on social media last night.

He said: "Into the next round. Incredible night, we appreciate the support, I know we had loads in the stadium and loads watching back home staying up late.

An Iranian football representative was quick to react to the US national team's elimination after US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin previously said he "danced a happy dance" when Iran were knocked out.

A statement issued through a spokesperson said: "Now the whole world is dancing to celebrate politics' humiliating defeat by football."

FIFA strictly limits purchases to four tickets per match per household, and they must be bought through the official portal or a verified reseller, such as Ticketmaster, AXS, StubHub or Vivid Seats.

StubHub listings currently start at £2,091, Vivid Seats begin at £2,160, and Ticketmaster's cheapest seats are sitting at £3,660. High-end tickets across these sites easily stretch from £5,600 to over £20,000.

Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly been offered a new contract to lead the US national team into the next World Cup in 2030 - but did not want to commit either way in his post-match interview last night.

He said: "Now is not a moment to talk about that … we see, assess the tournament, and for sure in the next weeks we can start to talk, if the federation wants to talk."

Rodri has apologised after his angry clash with former Manchester City team-mate Bernardo Silva. Silva had to be pulled away from the Spain midfielder during Portugal's World Cup defeat to the 2024 European champions.

Croatia have issued a formal complaint about their World Cup exit at the hands of Portugal, according to the Dubrovnik Times. The 2022 bronze medallists thought they had taken the match to extra time when Josko Gvardiol found the net to make the score 2-2 in injury time.

However, a lengthy VAR check decided there was an offisde as a detector within the World Cup football picked up a vibration from the ball touching the hair of Igor Matanović. They have also issued a complaint about the penalty that was given against them, which was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo.

When asked about the ban, Folarin Balogun said: "When you're given a red card, usually the protocol is you don't play in the following game. Then, when that decision's overturned, of course, it's going to be controversial.

"So it didn't really surprise me too much. But as a player my job is just to go out there and focus on my job. And I'm disappointed we weren't able to win today."

He also added: "I accepted the decision when I was given the red card, and then I also accepted the decision when I was told I could play.

"There's not too much else I can really say on the on the matter. All that being said, Belgium were the better team today. They played much better than us."

The football will not be stopping today.

FIFA has defender Brazilian referee Raphael Claus after Donald Trump described him as "suspect" for red carding Folarin Balogun. While he was defending his phone call with Gianni Infantino, which triggered Balogun's suspension being suspended for a year, Trump attacked Claus during a recent conference.

FIFA have since issued a statement protecting Claus, saying: “FIFA ‌‌recognises Raphael Claus as one of the world’s leading professional referees and a valued member of Team One – FIFA’s elite group of referees – at the FIFA World Cup. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.”

FIFA referee chief Pierluigi Collina also said: "Raphael Claus is refereeing at his second FIFA World Cup, having been with us in Qatar ‌‌in 2022. He is an experienced and highly respected referee, and we maintain full confidence in him as a trusted match official.”

Belgium made a thinly veiled jibe at FIFA and Donald Trump after they comfortably beat the USA 4-1 in the World Cup round of 16.

He said: "FIFA and all the different people involved explained, and those are the rules. It was a clear explanation, so I have no comment on that [President Trump admitting today he called Gianni Infantino to review Balogun's red]. "Belgium was the better team."

USA captain Tyler Adams believes inspiring American children to take up football will be enough of a victory to them. In his post-match interview, he said: "Yeah, that tonight can't be a direct reflection of what we were trying to accomplish. Because, again, you have good days and you have bad days.

"And today was one of our bad days, and it got the best of us. I think we came out here with the ambition that we could go really far in this tournament. We didn't, obviously, go as far as we'd like.

"That being said, if we inspired just a few kids throughout this journey, then we did something right. I wish we could have won tonight. The fans deserved it. The support that we've had over the past few weeks, they deserve it.

" The people back home deserve it. So, yeah, I can't thank the fans enough. I can't thank this coaching staff, the support staff, and everyone that supported us throughout this journey enough. They've helped us grow, and we've gone through tough times and amazing times throughout this journey. Right now is a tough time, but we'll grow from it."

Charles de Ketelaere nicked the ball of his toes and Vanaken was there to pass into an empty net.
