When one can achieve one’s goals despite one’s disability, women with full physical abilities can accomplish even greater feats with will and determination, said Sk. Salma, an award-winning para-swimmer.

Participating in a programme organised by the Sports Authority of A.P. (SAAP) as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations in Vijayawada on Satuday (March 7), Ms. Salma encouraged women to strive to reach their goals. Women athletes who represented the State at national and international levels shared their stories behind achievements on the occasion.

L. Vijayalakshmi, a mountaineer and cyclist from a middle-class family, recalled that she stepped out of her confined life after the demise of her husband and began to learn cyclining. She also took part in competitions. Even at the age of 63, she continues to cycle 60 to 80 km regularly, she told the women, reminding them that nothing is impossible. Seconding her, K. Ashakiran Rani, another mountaineer, encouraged women to overcome their obstacles and pursue their dreams.

Nagidi Gayatri, who brought laurels to the State by winning big in national canoeing events, Kumari Cheyiboyina Aaryani, an award-winning roller skater, SAAP Vice-Chairperson and Managing Director S. Bharani were also present on the occasion.
