Every Year After fans have been left worried about Charlie's fate

Prime Video's brand new drama ended on a brutal cliff-hanger

Every Year After is finally here, with all eight episodes available to binge watch now. Adapted from Carley Fortune's beloved Every Summer After book, the series follows obituary writer Percy Fraser (played by Sadie Soverall) as she confronts her complicated past.

The 28-year-old grew up spending summer holidays in the lake town of Barry's Bay, where she met the Florek brothers, Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie (Michael Bradway).

She quickly formed a bond with Sam, which blossomed into a romance over the years. That is until Percy makes a huge mistake that forces her to leave the Bay for a decade.

As the show unfolds, viewers learn that Percy left because she betrayed Sam by sleeping with his elder brother, Charlie. This leads to a major falling out between the trio.

While Sam and Percy slowly work towards reconciliation, Charlie completely buries himself in his corporate job.

In the finale, Charlie unexpectedly stumbles upon a photo of himself, Sam and Percy in his office. It turns out his boss' wife bought the photograph at a gallery and framed it, unaware who the teenagers in the image were.

Before leaving the office, Charlie takes a final moment to admire the picture but he becomes overwhelmed by emotion and collapses. The scene then fades to black before viewers find out exactly what happened.

Does Charlie die in the Every Year After finale?

No, Charlie doesn't die in the Every Year After finale. He actually suffers a heart attack after being reminded of home.

Actor Bradway explained the scene to Deadline when the show hit screens.

"It was a heart attack. We’re gonna let Percy have the panic attacks. Charlie gets the heart attack," he told Deadline.

"Obviously, [Charlie’s] father died from a sudden heart attack, which is a big reason why Sam wanted to be a cardiologist and to help people, because of what happened to his father."

He continued: "And then it just so happens that Charlie also has heart problems, and unexpectedly, he’s looking at the famous photo and he’s reminiscing, and unfortunately it hurts too much, and he has a heart attack."

The photo is actually a central part of Fortune's sequel book, One Golden Summer, in which the identity of the mystery photographer is revealed to be Alice Everly, Charlie's one true love.
