Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe highly anticipated five-match T20I series between India and England kicked off with high drama at the Banks Homes Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The ENG vs IND clash promised fireworks from the get-go, especially with Shreyas Iyer making his captaincy debut for India’s T20I side. However, the first innings wrapped up with mixed emotions for the Men in Blue, featuring a stellar recovery, record-breaking hitting, and a chaotic, viral miscommunication that became the talk of the town before weather gods intervened.
Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma discuss run-out blunder mid-pitch during the 1st T20I
The drama unfolded early in the second over after opener Sanju Samson was dismissed cheaply for just 1 run. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan walked out to the middle to join his explosive opening partner, Abhishek Sharma. Looking to get off the mark on just his second delivery, Kishan flicked a ball toward mid-wicket and instinctively sprinted down the track for a risky single.
However, Abhishek was caught ball-watching as England’s quick-witted captain, Harry Brook, rapidly intercepted the ball. Spotting the danger, Abhishek stayed his ground and sent Kishan back midway. Brook sent a sharp throw straight into the gloves of Jos Buttler, catching Kishan short of his crease despite a desperate, diving effort.
The immediate aftermath was caught on the stump microphones, revealing an uncomfortable and highly visible conversation between the two batters while the decision was referred to the third umpire. A visibly frustrated Abhishek asked Kishan, “Tu pahuncha ki nahin pahuncha, kya kar raha hai yaar Ishan?” (Did you reach or not? What are you doing, yaar, Ishan?). A disappointed Kishan replied from the middle of the pitch, “It was right in front and was my call,” before walking off for a two-ball duck. This added to Kishan’s recent running woes, marking his second consecutive T20I run-out after a similar mix-up against Ireland.

Recovery, rain, and looking ahead to Manchester
Despite the early shock leaving India scrambling at two wickets down within the first two overs, Abhishek completely transformed his frustration into an on-field masterclass. The dynamic left-hander went on a rampage, smashing 59 runs off just 24 deliveries. Striking at a breathtaking rate of 245.83, Abhishek hammered 6 fours and 4 sixes. In doing so, he etched his name in the history books as the fastest player in T20I history to complete 100 sixes in terms of balls faced.
Abhishek found an excellent ally in skipper Iyer, who anchored the recovery with a mature 68 off 47 balls. A late finishing flourish from Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 42 off 21 balls, propelled India to a highly competitive total of 189/7 in their allotted 20 overs. For England, returning pacer Saqib Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers, breaking partnerships to finish with impressive figures of 3 for 33.
Unfortunately for the roaring crowd in Durham, the much-awaited second innings never commenced. Persistent rain began pouring down heavily during the innings break, leaving the outfield unplayable. With no signs of clearing, the match was eventually called off.
With the first match ending in a frustrating washout, the action now shifts to Old Trafford in Manchester. Both teams will lock horns for the second T20I on Saturday, July 4, where India will hope to sort out their running lines, and cricket fans will look forward to a complete 40-over contest.
